I'm a little late with the condolences. I googled Rich's name out of idle curiosity this afternoon and was shocked to read his obituary. I haven't seen or talked to Rich in almost 50 years - we lived in the same dormitory on the same floor at St. Louis U. He is one of my favorite memories from that period of my life. We were very good friends, and he was a sort of proto-type for many of my subsequent friends - smart and funny. We had plenty of good times together and I think of him often. I hope his passing was not too difficult for him or those who loved him. He was a great guy and it sounds like he had a great family and a great life.

To BJ and Rich's family:

Although I couldn't attend the services in person, I was there in spirit. In my 11 years at SCU, Rich was my mentor and sounding board. He taught me so much about financial aid and how to act as an administrator in higher education. We didn't always agree but we respected each other. He often spoke of you and his kids. He was so proud of his children and he loved you so much.

In your time of sorrow and loss,

Rita (LeBarre) Grogan
Former Director of Financial Aid at SCU

Rich we are going to miss you. You were truly one of the best human beings I ever came across. You were willing to listen, but were very up front and honest in our dealings. One can't ask for any more. You were special, thanks for all your kindness. God bless your family.

So very sorry for your loss. I sat with you , Richard and David at jakes wedding. A few weeks ago. Just remember listening to you talk about how wonderful a grandpa he was. How much he loved playing with the kids. It just seems so unfair when things like this happen. Hope David is doing ok. Doris Rooney

Our deepest sympathy to BJ and family. We knew Richard for just a short time. But I will always remember his love of people, wine and reading. I know he did not like the Texas Heat..but his friends here in Texas will sorely miss him. Rest in peace, may God grant you everlasting life. Till we meet again in that mansion in the heavens, our memories will never die with knowing you, Richard. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, BJ in this time of sorrow for you and your family. We hope to see you again soon back in Texas.

Sherry and David Duffey

Rich Toomey was one of the finest men I've had the great pleasure to know and call not only mentor but friend. I will miss everything about him - from his sage advice on education and raising children to his quick wit. I'll especially miss the spirited banter and comparisons he made between his beloved Ducks and my hometown Buckeyes. You will be sorely missed dear friend. May BJ and your family find comfort knowing that you are in the hands of our Lord.

I had the distinct honor to work with Rich at Santa Clara from 1977 to 1997.
He truly was an amazing friend and colleague. In my forty-seven years in the higher education field I never worked with nor known anyone more conscientious, professional and kind than this man. I consider myself blessed to have had Rich be a part of my life. So, while we must mourn his passing, we are forever grateful for his having lived among us.

Dear Toomey Family:

I first met Rich at Saint Louis University in 1964. Alex Anderson and I were roommates and Rich lived down the hall. We had a great floor on Walsh 3.

What a great guy. Tremendously funny and quick-witted. Lost track of each other after graduation, but Alex kept me informed of Rich's doings. He accomplished so much.

So sorry to hear of his passing. Condolences to your family. My prayers are with you in this time of sorrow.
