David Daniels Obituary

Dr. David N. Daniels
Aug. 30, 1934 - May 26, 2017
Resident of Palo Alto
Dr. David Daniels thoughtfully contributed to the lives of so many others through his generosity, love, and wisdom.
David was born in Palo Alto, CA and subsequently raised in Santa Rosa and Santa Barbara. He attended medical school at Stanford University School of Medicine where he specialized in Psychiatry. He worked for the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University Medical Center and the Veteran's Administration Hospital before opening his Private Practice in Palo Alto. He was a maverick in the field of Psychiatry, one of the first to view therapy as equally important to medication management. Career accomplishments: helping thousands of clients through private practice, Adjunct Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, co-author of The Essential Enneagram, co-author of Violence and the Struggle for Existence, co-founder with Helen Palmer of standardized Enneagram training and the Enneagram Association in the Narrative Tradition, and founder of the International Enneagram Association.
David enjoyed biking, swimming, tennis, and the outdoors. He was a commissioner and coach of AYSO soccer, active in Neighbor's Abroad, and he was a volunteer docent and philanthropist for the David C. Daniels nature center through the Mid-Peninsula Regional Open Space Trust.
David was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years Judy, children Denise and John ("JD"), grandchildren Dylan, Kailey, and Mac, and sister Dana. He was preceded in death by his youngest son, David. His loving spirit will be missed by all that knew him.
A memorial service for friends, colleagues and family will be held on Friday June 30 at 11 a.m. at St. Raymond Catholic Church, 1100 Santa Cruz Ave, Menlo Park, CA 94025. Donations in memory of David may be made to Mid-Peninsula Open Space Trust https://www.openspace.org/daniels.

Like everyone, I was shocked and saddened to hear about David's death. A wonderful man, teacher, physician, healer and Enneagram genius, David was my inspiration for learning and healing through the Enneagram. I will always have with me the memories of his wonderful smile, his self-effacing manner, his abundant knowledge and his open and often stated love for his wife. I think he mentioned Judy in all the Enneagram seminars and workshops I attended. It sounds corny and a bit trite, but I often would ask myself in certain situations "What would David do?" He made a remarkable impact on my life in so many ways. I will treasure all the learnings and experiences I had in conferences and seminars under his capable leadership. He really did inspire, and has left us all a legacy of his kindness, his intelligence and his great humanity. What a wonderful man to have known! Peace and Blessings to Judy and family.
