Steve graduated from Covington High School and received his bachelor's degree and Master of Arts in Teaching from Miami University. He was a beloved teacher of history at Bethel High School for 30 years and Troy Christian for 8 years. After retiring from teaching, he enjoyed volunteering at the National Museum of the United States Air Force and the Miami Valley Veteran's Museum. Steve also served in various positions with Boy Scout Troop 1033 for many years. He loved serving his Lord by teaching His word, sharing with others and spending many hours with his church family. The highlight of his year was vacationing in Grand Marais, Michigan, with his family. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, reading and collecting books and just talking and learning from others.
A celebration of Steve's life will be held this summer.

Mr. Shively was by far one of my favorite teachers at Bethel. He never showed favoritism and was always so invested in the lives of his students. He wanted to know them and learn from them. I always remember him saying if he got in trouble with his wife he was in deep Kimchi! Hahaha!
I also remember him having us write ourselves a letter, each year, with short-term and long-term goals for ourselves. Then he’d send them to us at the end of the year and we’d get to look them back over. It taught me a lot about aiming for something in life and not just letting it pass me by.
Mr. Shively and I had just reconnected in the past few years when I ran into him at the US Air Force Museum. He was just as sweet, caring and funny now as he was when I was in High School 15+ years ago.
Mr. Shively, you are dearly missed. I am so grateful I knew you.
My prayers go out to Barb and all of your family. May they feel peace and be comforted in knowing your body is fully healed and you are rejoicing with Jesus daily :)

I've know Steve since the 4th grade. We shared many of the same interests and had so much fun together growing up. So many great memories. He was my best man at my wedding and I remember in the reception line one of my wife's grandmothers gave him a big kiss, thinking he was me! (Well, we did bear a resemblance). Anyway, to say he will be missed is an understatement, but I know we well see him again because he has simply moved to a better home and is rejoicing in Jesus' presence. Later, Steve

Taught with Steve for many years at Bethel. One of the qualities of a good teacher is what kids say about your strengths as a teacher. Reading what has been said verifies that Steve was well thought of. Heaven just added a great History teacher. RIP, STEVE.

Our sympathy to Mr. Shively’s family. We know his passing is a great loss for all of you, his community, and his past students. It was obvious he loved to teach history and not only motivated and challenged his students, but loved them as well. They loved him back. Thankful He is with the Lord he served so well.

Mr. Shively was one of my favorite teachers, he made history fun and interesting for me and taught me to critically think about the government.
Aside from that, he also exemplified how a good person should be, not by words but in actions. I never could play chess with him though- he was too good! Greatly remembered, always with us..... GOD'S PEACE; my teacher and friend...

Mr. Shively was a great teacher at Bethel. He let my friends and I eat lunch in his classroom frequently. We made him laugh and roll his eyes a lot. All in good fun =) Senior year government class he taught, may be the single most important project that prepared me for college. We had to write a 26 page paper. Which was 20 more pages than I had ever written before haha. Whenever my friends from high school get together, we always talk about him fondly. He was a warm and friendly guy and he will be missed.
