Larry Good Obituary

Capt. Larry Good pulled into safe harbor on Saturday morning, May 20, 2017. Larry passed with the love of his life, Dr. Laurey Hanselman by his side, his brother, David, and sister in law, Jane. He was visited the night before by his sister, Bev Fitzpatrick and her husband, Shaun. Larry was above all things a lifelong learner, with a bachelor's degree from Adrian College, graduate studies in botany from University of Hawaii, masters in cartography from MSU and associate's degree from Lansing Community College. He achieved his commercial captain's license later in life. But more than that, he learned and studied, mastering diesel engines, botany of all types, investment investigation, sailboats of all types and antique car repair. He worked as first mate on the retired trawler, Nathaniel Bowditch in Seattle, and as a medical technical repair specialist. When he "retired" he became a tall ship captain in the Great Lakes, sailing tall ships from Saginaw and Grand Traverse, and specializing in engine maintenance, and crew safety in addition to working with the Maritime Heritage Alliance. During all of this he indulged his passion for plants and flowers, and raised stag horn ferns of massive proportion. But the joy of his life was his 18-year relationship with wife, Dr. Laurey Hanselman. Together they cooked, baked, and shared in projects great and small, making a life together on White Cabin Road. They shared joy, and met life's challenges together, with passion. They were together to the end. Larry was the son of Lawrence and Evelyn (Villwock) Good, originally from the Cleveland, Ohio area. He is survived by his brother David and his wife Jane and his sister Bev Fitzpatrick and her husband Shaun. A private service will be held on the Maritime Heritage Alliance Ship "Madeline", in Grand Traverse Bay, at a later date. Memorial donations should be sent to Maritime Heritage Alliance at 13268 S.W. Bay Shore Dr, Traverse City, Michigan, 49684.
