He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother Ted Mattox, and his wife Nancy, a nephew Ernie Mattox, a niece Carol Mattox, sister-in-law Linda Mattox, and a great-grandson Michael Dowdy.
He graduated from Hale High School in 1952 and studied business at the Hard Knocks College, learning how to operate a business during some very hard years. In 1950, he started in the sign business at the age of 15 where he lettered trucks and was in the sign business for 74 years. Harley was employed by Alford Advertising Co., where he was a sign painter and salesman for about 6 1/2 years before coming to Moberly and going into business for himself in 1959. His business expanded from lettering trucks, trailers, and small signs, to unlimited types of signs, electronics, LED lighting, and an active crane service.
Harley was involved with the Knights of Columbus for 69 years; the Moberly Optimist Club as a charter member for 61 years and was the last living charter member; and the Fraternal Order of Eagles for 59 years. Harley was a Moberly Parks and Recreation Park Board Member for 17 years. He's served as President of each of these mentioned organizations/civic clubs, plus Missouri State President of the Eagles and South Central President consisting of all Missouri and Kansas as a national position in the Eagles. The Knights, the Optimist Club, and the Eagles are all 3 charitable organizations that give much back to the community in which we live and throughout the country.
He was an avid St Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed going to Busch Stadium or watching the games on TV. He also loved to travel with Carlene. In their travels, they visited almost every state in the union.
Dad loved his family and has instilled passion, charity, honesty, love, and integrity in each of his children. For his friends and acquaintances, he's instilled honor, loyalty and a deep friendship that time can't break. Dad had a saying that he's remembered for by many, so we'll leave you with it: "This is Harley Mattox and I wouldn't have it any other way."
In lieu of flowers, the family would love it if you would make donations in Memory of Harley Mattox to St. Pius X Catholic Church.
Words of comfort and support were shared with the family at the St. Pius X Catholic Church in Moberly, MO followed by the Missouri Past State Presidents Fraternal Order of Eagles service concluding with a Rosary. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at the St. Pius X Catholic Church. Committal prayer and burial took place in the St. Mary's Cemetery.
