Barbara Starr Obituary

Barbara Light Starr
Jan 13, 1930 - Sep 17, 2011
Barbara passed away on September 17, 2011 at the age of 81 after a recent diagnosis of terminal cancer. She was born on January 13, 1930 to Mae (Peckham) and Gustave "George" Light in Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Earl Dean Starr and sons Glenn and Geffrey Starr. Barbara is survived by sister Anita Fair, brother Charles Light, and three children Gary Starr (Lisa) of Vallejo, Greg Starr (Linda) of Turlock, and Gayle Mooney (Edward) of Elk Grove. Her eight grandchildren Gina Stepanovich (David), Karah Mowat (Dennis), Andrea Henderson (Ronald), David Starr, James Starr, Thomas Mooney (Andrea), Adam Starr, and Jennifer Sturges (Eric) and five great-grandchildren Jaylen Starr, Audrey Mowat, Amaya Henderson, Isabella Stepanovich, and Gabrielle Henderson will all miss her greatly.
Barbara's married life was a challenge while married to a career Navy man during wartime although she seemed to effortlessly raise five children while moving back and forth across the United States and up and down the State of California. With deep roots in family history and loving to hear stories of her ancestors, Barbara dove into genealogy, researched families, and wrote several family histories to record for future generations. As a current member of the Turlock Chapter, Barbara was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for over 34 years where she held many leadership positions and was a great inspiration and model for members to continue the great work of the DAR in the local community. Barbara was also active in the Turlock Sunshine Club for many years where again her leadership abilities greatly enhanced the camaraderie of the members. She has left a lasting, positive impact in both organizations. Barbara's spiritual support came as an active member of a Church of Christ wherever she lived.
A memorial service to celebrate Barbara's life will be on Saturday, September 24 at 12:00 noon at the Turlock Church of Christ, 801 North Tully Rd, Turlock. A private burial will be held at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the charity of your choice.

The service was so well done today. The picture of your mom really jumped right out the moment we entered the room. She was a lovely lady, in more ways than one. We have such great memories!!

To Gary and family, Greg and family and Gayle and family. We are all going to miss your mom so much! We are thinking of you in your sorrow and wish the best for you in your grief recovery. Barbie was a unique person and we all loved her and enjoyed the time she spent with the Jacob Family at our barbecues, parties, etc.
