Gerald Wasserman Obituary

Gerald "Gerry" Wasserman
October 30, 1920 ~ September 16, 2011

MONTEREY - In the painting studio of Gerald "Gerry" Wasserman, an untouched white canvas stands on the easel. He left it there to work on tomorrow and then quietly slipped away, just a month and a half short of his 91st birthday.
He was born in 1920, Ranger, Texas. After high school his art studies began at the Chicago Art Institute and then to Mexico and New York City and to Italy, France, and Spain to in the great Museums.
Called into the Army in 1942 he served in the Medical Detachment of 108th Infantry until discharged in 1945.
The following year he and his mother came to Carmel where he joined the Carmel Art Association.
He lived in Italy, Morocco, France, Spain and Greece, filling sketchbooks of what he saw.
In 1948, he married Barbara Blair and worked in display advertising, creating imaginative displays in papier mache and doing store windows decoration.
Gerry and Barbra bought a home on the hill in Monterey that in1973 became his painting studio where he worked daily for the rest of his life.
He has won numerous awards for his painting and sculpture and been in one-man shows in Europe, Africa, and the United States.
Preceded in death by his mother; his wife, Barbara; and his brother, Eddy Wasserman, a jazz musician, Gerry is also survived by a niece, Jennie; nephew, David; and his special companion in travel and life, Marilyn Farrar; along with her family, Scott and Tam Hennessy and Tia and Roger Peterson; a table of artist friends' "Tuesday Artists Lunch"; along with a legacy of patrons, friends, and people that his work has touched.
Contributions may be made to an organization of your choice.
A memorial exhibition is forthcoming at the Carmel Art Association. At Mr. Wasserman's request, no services are planned.

My dad was Edward Frumhoff, raised in Texas, and lived in California. I believe my dad and Eddy and Gerald Wasserman are related as cousins. I believe Jenny Wasserman was their mom. I have two paintings signed Wasserman, one from the 1960s and one from the late 1980s.
