Rodney Sullins Obituary

Rodney Dean Sullins
Arma - Rodney Dean Sullins of Arma, Kansas died Thursday, May 13, 2021 at the age of 65. He was in the woods doing what he loved and suffered from a heart attack.
He leaves behind his loving wife of almost 40 years Debbie, three children, Melissa (Gabriel) Dauphin, Travis Sullins, and Jeremy Sullins. He will probably be missed most by his five adoring grandchildren. Rod is also survived by his mother, Bernice Clark and two brothers, Charles (Susan) Sullins and Terry (Erika) Sullins. Rod has also left behind a lot of stuff that his family has been dying to purge from the garage for decades. He carried a wallet so thick it required special tools to remove it from his pocket, and bought too many stands to count. But after a life filled with joy, his family is what he loved the most. Rod took his love of helping others and knack for being able to fix anything and established Sullins Home Improvement over 40 years ago. Those who knew him also knew he had a deep love for hunting. He took that passion and established a second business, Southeast Kansas Outfitters. He was a man of great faith and determination. His desire to serve stemmed from his willingness to serve God. He was blessed with an incredible gift to heal and console those in need, which will forever leave a lasting impression on those he helped. His family will miss his protective nature and comfort he provided. He will be forever missed.
Funeral services will be at 10 A.M. Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1507 S. Rouse Street, Pittsburg, Kansas with Bishop Derek Thueson officiating. Burial will be at the Farlington Cemetery. Friends may call from 11 A.M. to 4 P.M. Tuesday at the Bedene Funeral Home in Arma. The family will receive friends from 9 A.M. to service time Wednesday at the church. The family suggests memorials to the Rodney D. Sullins Memorial Fund. Donations may be sent to or left at the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E. Washington, Box 621, Arma, Kansas 66712.

Rodney was a great man and friend. I knew him as an exceptional giving person. He always talked with me when we lived in Pittsburg and loved spending time with him. When we would come back to visit, he wanted to know how me and my family were doing and was always interested in how I was doing. He was someone I was always wanting to be around and talk with. I will miss seeing him when I visit. God bless Debbie and his family. I know he will be missed.

Hi Everyone! Rod and I grew up together. Our families were good friends. I had an older brother who was friends with Rods older brother Chuck. Rod and I went throughBoy Scouts together. We hung out after school and rode our bikes around, . We each bought a mini bike and many Saturdays we would take off on them riding along railroad tracks from Milpitas to Warm Springs. We would have lunch at a fast food place hang around Warm Springs and Then rode our mini bikes back to Milpitas! We hunted with our dads and when we couldn’t go to the duck club with them we hunted in an area close to our houses by ourselves. .When we were 15 and a half we went to summer School to take drivers Ed. And then we both took drivers training together so we could get our drivers permits. We used to hear In The Summertime by Mongo Jerry every day in Drivers Training,. After getting our drivers licenses we both wound up getting Volkswagen bugs and would take our girlfriends out in them together. We went to Santa Cruz , we went to parties, and sometimes we snuck out at night to meet up with our girlfriends who also snuck out. On a footnote we got caught one night by our parents. His dad used to say If you go to the dance , you pay for the music. Parents usually seem tough to their own kids but Rods parents and his family were awesome and so much fun ! No wonder he was so much fun.. Eventually we graduated from High School in 1973 went bowling on grad night and spent more time with our girlfriends! Rod always had the prettiest girlfriends! We had more great times after high school but a few years later he moved away from Milpitas and unfortunately we lost touch. I will forever treasure those years and Rodney Dean as his mom called him sometimes will always hold a special place in my heart. On a very positive note, Rod is a member of the LDS church and as coincidence has it , My wife is a member and I had decided a couple of weeks ago to also be baptized in the church. Someday I will finally meet up with my best friend again and we can spend more great times together!

Rieger and I started hunting with Rod in 2012 and we hit it off immediately! Even though we only saw each other once a year we kept in contact with multiple texts (often hunting humor related) and phone calls. To us he was so much more than our outfitter. He quickly became our dear friend. There truly wasn’t a time where he wouldn’t drop everything to come help us. When I heard about his passing, we played a video of my deer recovery with Rod talking in the background. It brought a smile and tears. There are so many stories we have from our time together and we’ll cherish every one of them. Each time we look at our trophies we’ll remember him. May God bless the Sullins family.
