Adele Blumberg Obituary

Adele Rosenberg Blumberg

AGE: 98 • Bridgewater

Adele Rosenberg Blumberg, 98, born on January 19, 1916 in Harrisburg, PA, died peacefully at home with her family on December 10, 2014 after a long struggle with cancer. She graduated from Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA in 1937, where she met Leonard Blumberg, whom she married in 1940; with him, she moved to Somerset County and their marriage lasted until his death in 2010. She was an accomplished pianist throughout her life, and taught piano when she was young. Adele was a warm, generous, charming hostess and a skilled needle worker. With Leonard from 1950-1955, she co-published the first daily newspaper in Somerset County, The Somerset Star. They were avid world travelers and arts enthusiasts. Adele was best known as a lifelong activist in her various communities, and was greatly beloved by members of those communities.

Adele Blumberg was a trustee of the George Street Playhouse, New Brunswick, Bound Brook and Bridgewater-Raritan Education Foundations, and the Bridgewater Committee for Creative Arts. She was a member of the boards or an officer of the American Red Cross, Somerset Valley Visiting Nurse Association, Somerset County Homemaker Service, Somerset County Community Concerts, Opera Theater of New Jersey, Central New Jersey Jewish Home for the Aged, Hadassah of Somerset, PeopleCare Center in Bridgewater, Bridgewater-Raritan PTO, Institute for the Arts & Humanities Education, Printmaking Council of New Jersey, the Bound Brook Educational Foundation, and AAUW of Somerset County. She was a past president of the Somerset County Girl Scout Council and the Rolling Hills Girl Scout Council, and of the Jewish Federation of Somerset Hunterdon, and Warren counties. Ms. Blumberg was a founder of the National Council of Jewish Women in Somerset County and the Jewish Family Service of Somerset County.

Adele Blumberg received many awards, both individually and with her husband Leonard. For her years of service on the Bridgewater Township Local Assistance Board, many as president, the mayor declared "Adele Blumberg Day" in 1983. In 1998, she received an Honorary Alumni Award from the Dickinson College Law School. She and Leonard were the first couple to be declared "Citizens of the Year" by the Somerset County Chamber of Commerce in 1998 and in 2009, they received a Tribute from Temple Sholom, Bridgewater, where they were founding members.

She is survived by her brother, Jerome Rosenberg, of Pittsburgh, daughter Joyce Kozloff and son Allen Blumberg, of New York; her grandchildren Nikolas Kozloff, Erika Blumberg and Jesse Blumberg of New York and Joshua Blumberg of Tokyo; and great grandson, Miles Barron Blumberg of New York.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Friday, at Temple Sholom, 594 N. Bridge St., Bridgewater. Interment at Temple Sholom Cemetery. Donations to charity of choice. Arr. by Bruce C. Van Arsdale F.H., 111 N. Gaston Ave., Somerville.

Please accept our sincere condolences on the passing Adele Blumberg. An outstanding citizen of Somerset County whom I had the good fortune to know and admire.
