Jeff Bunnell Obituary

Jeff Bunnell

North Plainfield - Jeff Bunnell, 72, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 19, 2020.

A lifelong resident of North Plainfield, he was a graduate of North Plainfield High School and Rutgers University. After retiring from Haarman & Reimer in Mountainside, he worked as a furniture refinisher for Chem - Clean in Scotch Plains. He also refinished many pieces of furniture for family over the years.

Jeff was a longtime and active member of the Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church and a member of the North Plainfield Senior Citizens. During his life, he enjoyed fishing, golfing and taught chair caning at the North Plainfield Adult School. He was a 50 year member of the Green Brook Swim Club and eagerly looked forward to many summers of swimming. Jeff also looked forward to planting his vegetable seeds each spring and having his garden of string beans, tomatoes and lettuce when summer arrived.

He especially enjoyed time spent with family and friends, as well as following Rutgers Sports and attending Somerset Patriots baseball games.

Jeff was the son of the late Franklin and Verna Bunnell. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Peggy (Squier); his daughter, Susan Jackson and husband Erik; two grandchildren, Connor and Kaelynn; sister, Betsy Cummins and husband Bill; their children, Kelly, Patrick and Michael; sister, Lynn Blakeslee and husband George and their children; Jennifer, Brian and Becky; sister in law, Nancy Squier and many special, long time friends.

A memorial service will scheduled at a later date.

Donations in Jeff's memory can be made to the Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church, Living Memorial Fund, 170 Watchung Avenue North Plainfield, NJ 07060; or to the VNA Hospice c/o VNA Health Group Foundation, 23 Main Street, Suite D1 Holmdel, NJ 07733.

Jeff was my best friend over the 50+ years that I knew him. We had fun in Key Cub while in high school. We both went to Rutgers. He loved his garden and proudly showed me what was growing there. Over the years we went to many Somerset Patriots ball games. He was a faithful friend and he will be deeply missed. Jane, Eamon, Kelsey and I offer Peggy, Susan and the family our deepest condolences.

My sincere condolences to Jeff's family and loved ones. Our house in NP, being only several blocks away from the Bunnell's, the Hansen brother's, grew up spending hours,-- playing, riding bikes, exploring the woods, cub scouts, little league, all sports etc. from Kindergarden thru H.S! Jeff was always very kind and gentle, a gifted student and athlete! As we all know he excelled as a student and great swimmer, but also he was a leader! I lost touch with Jeff after college when I moved to Arizona in 1973, saying Hi! and catching up a little at NPHS reunions. I am very sad today hearing of his passing. May he rest in peace. Jeff was a fine man and a good friend in school. Neither of the sports we loved were well attended so Jeff used to come and support the wrestling team and I would go and support the swim team. He always gave 100% effort. Jeff was a big, strong swimmer, but always kind and gentle with us guys half his size. I never remember him saying an unkind word about anyone. Everyone I knew liked and respected him, as I did. He was a true gentleman. My wife and I used to get together with Jeff from time to time when we were still in New Jersey in the early 70s, but lost contact when we went to Kentucky, and after that Massachusetts. One of the problems of living outside the promised land, as we still call New Jersey, and being busy with a lot of stuff is that we lose contact with friends with whom we never wanted that to happen. Im saddened that I wont see Jeff on this side of heaven at reunions. His passing impoverishes us all.

I went to Watching Avenue Presbyterian Church where I have fond memories of Jeff. We were both members of the youth group. I also graduated from NPHS IN 1965 along with Jeff. I will remember him as a smart, funny, respectful person. May he Rest In Peace .
My heartfelt feelings of sadness go out to his family & friends.
