Swartz Funeral Home - Flint Obituary

HARRIS, William W. (Bill) - Of Davison, age 78, died Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at McLaren-Lapeer.

Bill was born in Flint, Michigan, on November 5th, 1942, to parents Rita E. Harris (Glowski) and Robert W. Harris. After graduating from Flint Central High School in 1959, Bill earned a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from the University of Michigan-Flint in 1963, and a Master’s Degree in Management from Wayne State University. He started his career in service to the community in the healthcare field at Hurley Hospital in Flint, MI, and finished his career as the Director of Diagnostic Services at Pontiac General Hospital, retiring in 2000 at the age of 58. Bill always demonstrated a strong sense of family and service to others, and if you were fortunate enough to meet him, you became "adopted" into the family.

Bill married Kay Annette Harris (Johnson) in May of 1968. After the birth of their first daughter April in 1969, they moved from Pontiac, MI, to Davisburg, MI. Bill and Kay enjoyed time with friends and family while living on Big Lake, and their second daughter Robyn was born in 1972. Bill had many adventures with his daughters on the water and taught them that there wasn’t anything that they couldn’t do. Between swimming (hold your breath), canoeing (the canoe was full of water), skating (dad was not so graceful), fishing for bluegills, and conducting turtle races, the years on the lake were wonderful.

In his active retirement, Bill enjoyed swimming with the "Pool Ladies" at the Davison Athletic Club, where he had many friendships over the years. He enjoyed collecting coins and stamps, cooking "creative" spicy food, and hunting deer. Bill was the official camp cook - while he only got one deer in all the years he went up north, he played lots of cards while relaxing with his buddies. Bill also enjoyed traveling the world, from Europe to Asia to the Caribbean, with his "favorite sister" Marianne. His extended family was all over the globe.

To mourn his loss, Bill leaves his daughter April Elliott (Harris) and her husband Scott Elliott, and daughter Robyn Harris and her partner Eric Collins; granddaughter Annabelle Calderwood and beloved grandson Skyler Flynn Collins; step-grandchildren Alexa Locchead, Ethan Elliott, and Izabella Elliott; sisters Marianne Corrigan, Teresa Mull, and Kristine Pado and her husband Tom Pado; and niece Dr. Anne Corrigan Day and her husband Jonathan Day. He also leaves behind many Glowski, Johnson, and Harris cousins, nephews, and extended "adopted" family. The family would also like to thank Bill's loving caregiver Amy Klamert.

Bill may have left us but he lives on in our hearts. In honor of his wishes, he will be cremated, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate in Bill’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association through act.Alz.org.

Not sure what to say?

We lived across from the Harris family on Berkley when we were kids...their Mom was such a wonderful friend to me & helped me so much

My condolences to April and Robyn and family. Mr. Harris hired me in 1984 as a secretary in the Pathology department of NOMC. We shared many good memories at the hospital. He was always very, very kind to
me. He taught me how to save for retirement, thank goodness. He will be missed.

My Condolences to Bill’s Family, I met Bill at Davison Athletic Club in August-September Swim Class. We all loved Bill, didn’t know till I saw the Obituary, that I also worked with Bill at PGH till 1986. Wish I got to know him better, to connect the dots. Bill always made the ladies laugh, one occasion he was helping someone out of the pool, after some struggles, he finally succeeded and exclaimed, “Whew, she was Slippery”, we all got a chuckle out of this!! GOD BLESS your Family!!

Bill was my friend for close to 50 years, we worked together , went hunting together, Lived down the road from each other. I’m mostly at a loss for words. This man would do anything for his family and his friends. I was heart broken when April’s call came. I will miss his company and friendship , and will hold his memory close. Rest In Peace Brother.

Although I haven't seen Bill in over 60 years, I remember growing up across Berkley St. from the Harris household. As kids, we spent a lot of time in Ballenger Park and knew all the neighbors at our end of the street. My sympathy to the family, may all the good memories you have of Bill bring you peace and comfort.

Bill definitely left a big hole in the water. I remember and will always miss his "grand entrances" into the water aerobics class--his enthusiastic and LOUD cannonball into the pool a few minutes after class started. And for a minute or so...everything stopped. Bill's here.

I will miss my buddy Bill a great deal. He has been my friend since we met in our water aerobics class at Davison Athletic Club back around 1998. Very often we’d get the ‘stink eye’ from Teresa when we talked more than we worked out during our class . We talked about everything from cooking to politics, & just life in general. Bill always had a joke or a funny story to share. Lots of times he’d send me a joke in an email after I’d already left for the club. Then he’d ask if I had read...

The Davison Athletic Club "pool ladies" will miss him terribly. If there can be an empty space in a big pool of water, he's left it. I had the pleasure of being his instructor for 22 years and I'm better for having known him. I will miss our conversations & his unique sense of humor.

My prayers
