I have many great childhood memories of Vern, and his brothers at their cabin. Vern was such a friendly guy. I'm so sorry for your loss, he was a true pioneer.

Vern got our family started in commercial salmon fishing by leasing us our first site in 1970. He taught my dad (Tom Sr.) and uncle (Walt Sonen) to fish that first summer, a tradition that continues in our family to this day. I had the pleasure of visiting with he and Sylvia 4 or 5 years ago and enjoyed hearing stories about the "old days" on the beach. He was a true Alaskan pioneer in every sense of the word. My father met Vernon and his brother Howard in the 1940s, when he first fished and hunted in the Susitna area. Vernon was the last of his kind, remarkable men that could do anything.
