Abigail Bryant Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 11, 2014.
BRYANT, Abigail Dorothy Jean

"I don't want to make a difference, I want to be the difference."

It is with broken hearts that we reflect on the life of our dear Abby. Born in Halifax on April 8, 1994, she died peacefully with her mother Sandra by her side on May 8, 2014. Abby attended the Montessori Children's House and Armbrae Academy where she was much beloved by students and teachers, as well as being a cornerstone of their theatre program and valedictorian. She completed the Foundation Year Program at King's College in 2013 where she was deeply inspired by the great philosophers of life. Abby was very creative and had an amazing sense of humour, both of which she applied to theatre, song, art and her unique sense of style. Abby bravely battled leukemia as a child, and thanks to a bone marrow transplant and overwhelming support and sheer determination of her mother Sandy was able to beat it and thrive.

Abby's sweetness, warmth, and ability to see the positive side of everything and goodness in everyone were among her greatest qualities and touched everybody who met her. She and her mother Sandra shared a rich life, full of friendships and travel. Abby's caring and generous spirit led her to become a founding member of the Halifax branch of the Friends of Gilda Society.

Abby is survived by her mother Sandra (Ethan), her father Alexander Boyd, her aunts Merle/Marilyn (David) and Debora (Roy); her uncles Jack (Wini), Frank (Connie), Ron (Marie), and her cousins George (Alex), Liam, Nicki, Taylor, Sam, Scott, Dana, Cary, Frankie; and her girl friend Megan and dear friends Hayley and Alex. She was predeceased by her grandparents Dorothy and Jack Bryant and her honourary grandmother, Peggy Smith.

We would like to thank all the incredible doctors, nurses and staff of the Victoria General 6A and 3A for their help and support and of course the IWK, especially the oncology department. A special appreciation to her medical practitioner, Dr. Maria Patriquin.

Service at St. Mary's Basilica, Wednesday, May 14, 9:30 am. Reception following at Pier 21.

I've just seen the movie, "The Healer" whose story Abigail plays a centrol role. I thought it too much on the religious side, but I am sure Abigail's part was true and wonderfully hopeful. I also have been known to help people and I watched this on a day a dear friend happened to tell me on his birthday he has been diagnosed with cancer. I will tell him about the movie and the thoughts in it and had already begun to try to help him. I wish more would have been said about Paul Newman and what he tried to do before his death from it.

Blessings,
My family was sitting down after brunch and decided to watch a movie. My husband was scrolling through the movies looking for a particular one and all of a sudden he stopped and stared. It was the “Healer”. We decided that we would watch it. Your story touched our lives and Blessed us. We are going to show this movie to our group at Church.

Thank You for the inspiration,
Sonja

Abigail you are still touching the heart, soul, mind and lives of people you have neve met. I am honored to have read your poem. It will be a cherished part of my personal journal. As well as an important piece of my youth sports coaching curriculum. The words are strong reminder that it is not every year, month, day or hour that matters. It is every breath. Thank you for that.

My wife and I have just watched the film The Healer, it wasn't until the end that we found it was partly based about your daughter.
The poem is so beautiful and brought a tear to my eye.
I googled the poem which is when her obituary came up.
I truly feel for you losing such a beautiful young lady to this terrible disease.
Our thoughts are with you.

I have just finished watching The Healer and was intrigued to find that Abigail was based somewhat on your daughter. I loved her poem, to just breathe. Thank you for sharing her story in this remarkable movie. I believe in healers, because God can do all things. There is nothing to big that He can't handle. God bless you and your family, and God bless the Newman family for what Mr. Paul had started for those children.

It is almost 3am and I just finished watching the movie, The Healer, on Netflix. The movie shared hope but I was mostly touched by the teenaged girl, Abigail. Still embracing the wonderful part of life she shared that with others. Imagine my teary eyes when I learned what Paul Newman had done to help children with his camp programs and then about the poem of the real Abigail at the end. I had to learn more about her and I see that her spirit continues to touch others, with Cancer, in so many ways. I got a lump in my throat when I learned she was one of the founding members of Gilda's Club in Nova Scotia. Many young people won't remember Gilda Radner but she was a comedic trailblazer. God bless you, Sandra, and your family as you embrace Abby's spirit and know that she has blessed others years after her passing.

Truly an inspiration !! I just finished watching the movie on Netflix & not only was I brought to tears (men have emotions too), I was left with a feeling of calm and overwhelming hope. Just to know that a young lady like Abigail could stay positive through so much adversity, makes me realize there is still hope for those of us that choose to complain and struggle everyday. Thank You Abigail !!

I just watched "The Healer", again. I reflect mostly on what it must be to lose a child (I have 2 kids - a son and daughter) and I cannot fathom what it must be and actually forces the thought out of my mind. However, I actually want to say thank you for sharing in the celebration of Abigail's life. Thank you

Dear Sandra,

I am so very sorry to have learned today of Abby's death. From the very first time I met Abby and came to know her and those who love her through her initial treatment at the IWK; her strength, humour, and resilience were notable as was her luminous presence. Her light was obvious as both a young child and young adult.

I was always delighted to see Abby several times throughout recent years and witness her growth as an exceptionally beautiful young adult. She wholly embodied the phrase "wise young soul".

Losing Abby from this earth is a great tragedy. It is because of the great difference and impact that she made in so many lives that Abby will be so profoundly missed.

Dear Sandy - I am so sorry to hear about Abby's passing. I remember visiting with Andrea one time and Abby sang the song Heroes as we sat outside looking out over the water in a soft sunlight. To Abby's family- My deepest condolences. I was lucky enough to be able to play alongside Abby in Antigone in her first year. Theatre is a good place for people like Abby- a strong young woman with dedication, intelligence, boundless imagination, the bravery to face this imagination, and with an outstanding capacity for kindness and the spirit of generosity. She took to it with ease and grace, and an attitude that was integral to our ensemble. Her presence was so essential for us all. Everyone in the cast loved Abby. I was so sorry to hear of her passing. I think of her daily. I know that the King's community right across Canada will be thinking about her for some time to come.

My heart goes out to Abby's loved ones. Abby touched the lives of everyone she met. By the end of any conversation with her, you would be smiling. You couldn't help it, she was just that kind of person. Her infectious energy and positivity will be so greatly missed. I count myself lucky to have known Abby for the short time that I did. I will never forget her or her remarkable spirit.
