Dover: Addie W. (McFarland) Pickett, a lifelong resident of Dover, N.H. died November 22nd, 2008 from complications of cancer. She was eighty-eight. Addie graduated from Dover High School in 1938 and was captain of the girls’ basketball team in 1937 and 1938. Her love of basketball ended with the retirement of Larry Bird and her sports focus switched to tennis. She was caught by friends driving around Dover with a life-sized figure of tennis great Andre Agassi.

She was a dedicated employee of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for over 39 years. Upon retirement she enjoyed travel and acted as the tour coordinator for the Active Retirement Association in the 1980’s.Addie was frequently seen being walked by her beloved Samoyed dog, Gwenie, and embraced summers at Alton Bay NH. She was musically inclined, playing the violin and piano even into her later years. Knitting was a passion and after waiting 80 years for her first grandson, she enjoyed creating seasonally inspired sweaters for him. She was a loyal friend to young and old.

She was the widow of James F. Pickett, former Registrar of Deeds for Strafford County and long time Portsmouth Naval Shipyard employee. She is survived by her two daughters Joan Pickett of Cambridge MA and Sally (Pickett) Cadman of Hollis NH and precious grandson, Christopher. A memorial service at Langdon Place of Dover (60 Middle Road) where Addie was a resident will be held Wednesday November 26th at 2 pm. Addie was a grateful patient of the Seacoast Cancer Center at Wentworth- Douglass Hospital and the family requests donations be made in her memory, in lieu of flowers

Not sure what to say?

Dear Joan, Sally, and Christopher;

I am saddened by the passing of Addie. I know her as a vibrant person who saw and brought the best in others, including in life itself. It was a privilege and a pleasure to have known her.
In this time of sadness, I hope you can draw strength from the memories of her well celebrated life.
Addie will remain alive in our hearts and minds.

Sally and Joan,

I was saddened to hear of the passing of your mother.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

From all of Addie's friends at the Strafford County Genealogical Society, our condolences to Addie's family. For many years she was a moving force and avid contributor to the society. She will be sadly missed.

Dear Chris, You are famous with your Aunt Joan's friends because we know what a good kid you are - and how very happy you made your grandmother. Besides that, as you know, your aunt is competely crazy about you just like your grandmother. When you love somebody, your love is the biggest gift in the whole word. When you play music for them, they hear your love from wherever they are. I am sad that your grandmother died, but the happiness & love you gave each other will always be with you...

We send our sympathy and loving thoughts to both of you. Addie was so wonderful, and we are sure she and Andrea are having a grand old time!

Joan and Sally,
My sympathies on the loss of your mother. She was one of the nicest ladies that I've ever known. May she rest in peace.
