Addie Hayden Pugh was born July 25, 1930, in Steens,
Mississippi, the fourth of five children to Cornelius and
Mae Ida Hayden. Mrs. Pugh was a graduate of A.H. Parker
High School and Alabama A&M University. She completed
her Master’s in Education at the University of Alabama at
Birmingham.
In 1954, she married the love of her life, Mr. Willis Pugh,
and their union was blessed with three children, Velda Pugh
Kinsey, MD, Jasmine Pugh Taylor, MD, and Willis David
Pugh. Her love and care for her family was one of the many
hallmarks of her life. As a mother and grandmother, she
blessed her children and grandchildren with spiritual
guidance, thoughtful prayers, and educational workshops.
Mrs. Addie Pugh was an exemplary educator who had a gift
for appealing to the greatness in those she encountered.
Mrs. Pugh served as a dedicated teacher at Lewis Elementary
School, L.M. Smith Middle School, Lane Resource Center
and completed her career as a principal of Elyton School.
As a lifelong educator who served the Birmingham City
School System for 39 years, Mrs. Pugh was recognized by
the Birmingham Board of Education, Birmingham
Principals’ Association, Alabama House of Representatives, and Kiwanis Club of Montgomery for her
outstanding ability to inspire her students. Mrs. Pugh developed “Back to School” Workshops for the
young women of Grace House Ministries and was honored with the Legacy Award in recognition for her
valuable mentorship to the young women impacted by Grace House.
Her generous heart and servant-minded leadership was a witness to her faith in God. She was a faithful
servant at the Saint Andrews Baptist Church, and she later became a devoted member of Sixth Avenue
Baptist Church. Mrs. Pugh was a Golden Life member of the Birmingham Alumnae Chapter of Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and received the Chapter Member Extraordinaire Award and
Sisterhood/Bridge Builder Award. Mrs. Pugh was a member of Jack and Jill of America and later became
an Associate Charter Member for the Birmingham Chapter.
Her life will be forever cherished by her loving husband of 67 years, Willis Pugh, her three children
Velda (Robert), Jasmine (Herman), and Willis (Charlisa), eight grandchildren, Robert and Briana Kinsey,
Matthew, Johnathan and Jaylen Elise Taylor, Cara, William and Warren Pugh, a dedicated sister-in-law
Mrs. Cora Huggins, nieces, nephews, cousins and a loving church family and community of friends. We
will forever carry in our hearts her compassion, thoughtfulness, generosity, and faithfulness.
Our mother loved flowers and the family appreciates your sharing with us in this way.
Additionally, she valued the importance of education and loved Alabama A&M. The family
has established the Addie H. Pugh Memorial Scholarship to honor her as well. Please consider
