Adina Back

I had the great pleasure of working with Adina on what was to be her last project, a short history of Flatbush. She was wonderfully thorough, brilliant, warm, and funny. I loved being around her, even for that short time. All of my sympathy goes out to her family for this huge loss.

I had the pleasure of working with Adina when I was director of JFREJ and she joined the JFREJ board; and our paths crossed again at Brookyn College. Adina was infinitely helpful, thoughtful, and kind; simultaneously unpretentious and brilliant; a sister and a comrade.

I worked with Adina for many years on the Radical History Review, first when she was the wonderfully competent and simpatico Managing Editor about 13 years ago, and then as a fellow member of our Editorial Collective. It's hard to sum up such a fine person--principled, funny, always constructive. The kind of person you look forward to seeing again. All of us at RHR deeply miss her.

I want to extend my deepest and most heartfelt prayers and condolences to Linda, Gabriel and Isaiah, and the entire Back family, Toby, Nate, Efrem, Aaron, Rachel and Sara. Though I have not seen Adina in over 25 years, I do feel your loss and grief. Our families go back more than 40 years, and Adina was part of that.

We were so sorry to hear about Adina. Our sons graduated together this year from elementary school. We will miss Adina greatly and she will continue to be in our thoughts.

I had the great pleasure to work with Adina for several years on the Bridges and Boundaries Exhibition about the relationship between blacks and Jews for the Jewish Museum. In the midst of a tumultuous process she was always kind, thoughtful, compassionate, and so very smart. Working with Adina and getting to know her was one of the great joys of my professional life. She was such a caring, good and decent soul who lived a life devoted to others. I am so deeply saddened to learn of her...
