A funeral service for Adrian Marcos Elizalde, 30, formerly of North Bend, will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, at the North Bend High School gymnasium located at 2323 Pacific St. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park, 63030 Millington Frontage Road, in Coos Bay.

Adrian was born Jan. 30, 1977, in San Diego, Calif., the son of Jorge and Teresa (Klein) Elizalde. He died Aug. 23, 2007, in Al Aziziyah, Iraq.

Sgt. 1st Class Elizalde was a graduate of North Bend High School, where he lettered in wrestling, baseball and football. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1996, and was assigned as an infantryman with the 3rd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment in Fort Bragg, N.C. He later served as a long-range surveillance detachment team leader with Company D, 519th Military Intelligence Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division. In 2004, he was selected to attend the special forces qualification course at Fort Bragg to become a U.S Army Special Forces engineer. He earned the coveted title of Green Beret in 2005.

Some of his awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal with "V" device, Army Commendation Medal, second award; Army Achievement Medal, third award; Good Conduct Medal, third award; National Defense Service Medal; Iraqi Campaign Medal; Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon; Army Service Ribbon; and Overseas Service Ribbon. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Meritorious Service Medal.

He is survived by his daughter, Sydney Grace Elizalde of Klamath Falls; parents, Jorge and Teresa Elizalde of Renton, Wash.; and sister, Rachel Elizalde of Renton, Wash.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Sydney Elizalde Memorial Fund c/o Jorge Elizalde, 108 South 49th Pl. Unit B, Renton, WA 98055.

Adrian and I were in the 82nd, he was in 1st Platoon and I was in the 3rd and 2nd Platoon. I recall him going to Scouts. When I was in Okinawa I heard of his death. All my heart and best wishes go to his family.
