Al helped me get into business in 1979 and was my landlord for several years after that. I appreciated his hard work ethic and I learned from him each time we talked. He always had time for me and I enjoyed hearing his strong opinions on everything we discussed. When people would tell me what a difficult guy he was, my thought was "You just don't get it". He took pride in his and others accomplishments. I live in Montana now and last spring I made a special trip to Denver to visit Al at his home. I was happy to see that he was still the tough old codger I'd come to love. Amazingly, I thought of Al just last week and was going to call him, but got busy and forgot about it. I wish I'd called. Al has been a great influence on my life and I will miss him.
He was so much more than the brief discription in the paper. I remember him showing me articles about him that he had saved. I'd appreciate knowing if more have been printed lately.

Al was a character. I had multiple professional dealings with him and always came away (agreeing or disagreeing) thinking "This guys a character". Of course I mean that complimentary. What a personality.

I will miss Al coming into Alameda Water and Sanitation District office and giving us a "hard time"! Even though he loved to maintain his "mean" reputation, we liked him and were sad when he lost his wife, he was so sad. Now they can be together again. We will miss you, Al Martischang!
