Bikes, Photos and Family

Alan W. Friedlander was a family man with a handful of passions: bicycling, planning vacations and photography. He bought his wife, Helen, a bicycle, and the second weekend in September they headed from their home in Yorktown Heights, up the Westchester County Trail to Baldwin Place. When their daughter, Laura, was living abroad, they visited her, and he enjoyed studying books and maps whenever the family traveled.

The couple met at the Gristede's on Second Avenue at 68th Street, where he stocked shelves and she worked the checkout. They were married for 28 years, with a son, Steven, 26, and Laura, 22. Mr. Friedlander, 52, a senior vice president at Aon Corporation, had recently enjoyed taking pictures of the figure skating competitions his wife liked to attend. "He really did everything well, and he was a patient guy," she said, "so he took a gazillion shots." His four best pictures are displayed in a spare bedroom.

Mrs. Friedlander wanted to add one last thing: "My favorite time of day was 10 til 7 at night, because that's when he came home."

Not sure what to say?

My heart goes out to your family. Today a a friend of mine posted a picture of the 9/11 memorial and I saw Alan’s name. I decided to look up who he was. My condolences go out to whoever may read this and just know today in 2023 I am thinking and praying for all the family’s still grieving this unthinkable event. More than anything I wanted to tell Alan’s family that I’m thinking of all of you and praying for you all.

Remembering Alan on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

Gone but never forgotten. So grateful to have had you in my life. Patricia (Dobler) Lisi

Every year on this date I remember Alan. We both were in Risk Control and were together at many meetings and I enjoyed his company.

I had the pleasure of meeting and having dinner with Alan on his business trip to Chicago about two weeks prior to 9/11. I truly enjoyed his company and will not forget him.

Gone but never forgotten my sweet friend. xxo

I do not know you and I have never met you but, I was given your name today at the 9/11 Bike Rally in DC. I came to the internet to know more about the person whose name I wore on my shirt. It sounds as if you were a wonderful person and a hero. I read a very loving tribute from your son with regards to you being his hero. How wonderful. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten. I am privileged to have your name and I hope with all my heart that your family has found a small amount of peace...

Gone but not forgotten.... Great guy. Pat Dobler

Hey Friedlander!! I still have a copy of the original photo you took in AZ with my name on the street sign. Your wife was so kind to send it to me in a frame. I also keep that on my desk like the original. As always, you are still in my thoughts....
