Not sure what to say?

Dear Putzi,

Nancy and I only knew Alan a relatively short time. In that time we felt that we had met a dear friend. Alan was wise and caring and one of those rare people in whose presence you always felt relaxed, comfortable and engaged. While we are saddened for the too brief time that we knew Alan, we can only imagine how great the loss of those who had the privilege to know him longer.

To The Hirshberg Family:

As a Cornell Kappa Nu fraternity brother, I express my full respect for Al and his life. He was a gentleman and a caring person. Members of Phi Gamma Delta appreciate the ways in which Al enriched our life experience.

Sincerely,

Mike Duesing '62

Dear Mrs. Hirshberg and members of the Hirshberg family:

I was saddened to learn of Al's death, which was inevitable, given his terrible illness. I thank you for taking the trouble to put the notice in the Times. Although he and I were not close friends, I took great pleasure in any meetings we had over the years. I always, left with a smile, always learned something interesting, and noticed how everyone looked up to him. Alan was a gentle man and an extraordinary polymath as well....

Dear Putzi,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I did not have a chance to meet Alan at the Race in May, but I know how much he was loved by all his family and friends. Thinking of you, Nike

Putzi,

So sorry to hear of your loss. I learned that Alan was ill from John Kurtz a little over a year ago when my husband, Philip Johnson, died. Philip and Alan were friends and colleagues going back to Booz Allen in the early 80's. I know what a dreadful time this is for you and the children, and I just wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts. I don't know the younger children, but please pass this message along to Ellie, Will and Dorsey. Take good care of...

I was so sad to read late last night about Alan's death. He was so alive. Putzi, my heart goes out to you and the family. We may not have connected that much recently but Alan and you have always been in my warm thoughts and I've looked for you at Adat on the high holidays. Fondly, Marsha Gold (friend from old washington wine group/etc times)

The 1953 memory is faint, but dear, of Alan, the kid brother at the dinner table under his sister Ellen's smile.

---

I have fond memories of Fiji fraternity life with Al.
