Not sure what to say?

I was so sorry to hear about alan's passing. i got to see him at your family house in vermont about 4 years ago. he taught me a great deal about life and joy and words. i will miss him dearly.

We have so many fond memories from over fifty years of knowing Alan, from student days to working and raising our families to retirement, finally. Last week we dedicated a cold evening swim in Lake Michigan to Alan, who taught me (Pat) in Vermont the joy of completing an ice-cold skinny-dip at night. Alan was a treasure among our friends and we will remember him always and forever be grateful for his contribution to our lives.

I am so sorry to read of Professor Howe's passing. What a brilliant, kind, humble and yes, loving man he was. I remember working on the Kurosawa research with him as a UROP student and offering him my poor research, which he never turned down! He will be missed.

I was so sorry to hear of Alan's passing. Although I only saw Alan a handful of times since I graduated in 1987, I remember NELP like it was yesterday and I still count it as one of the biggest events of my life. Alan showed me that a great teacher can also be down-to-earth and personable. The seeds of my life today--writer, teacher, nature-lover--were all planted at NELP.

Alan was a kind, wise, fun-loving man; an inspirational teacher. I can't believe that he and Walter are now both gone, but their spirits live on and on in the hearts of old NELPers and new and future NELPers who never knew them but whose lives they have changed.

Lidie, so sorry to hear of Alan's passing.

Words always seem to fail us when those we genuinely admire, respect and love pass away from this world. Professor Howes was my dissertation chairman and one of the 2-3 most influential teachers I’ve ever had the good fortune to meet and interact with in my entire life. He was brilliant, compassionate, worldly yet humble, and the closest human to Socrates or Plato I have ever encountered. He was an absolutely outstanding teacher and I’m certain that, just like me, each and every student who...

Lidie,

I'm so sorry to hear of Alan's passing. He was an inspiration to me, and I credit much of where I am today due to his and Walter's influence while I was both a student and staff at NELP. His energy, enthusiasm, and love of literature and nature was contagious, and lives on in me. My sincere condolences, Alan was an amazing man.

To Alan Howes' family
I was a Doctor of Arts student at U of M in the early '80's.
I have fond memories of how wise and giving Dr. Howes was to all of us. I have just retired from teaching after 30 years, and was continually inspired by his commitment to teaching and literature. My sympathies to the family.
