I just found Alan's business card he had given me at our last City College High School reunion f the Class of 1950. On Googling his name today, I was shocked to learn of his passing. My intention was to call him. We spent our childhood play time and schools Pimlico Elementary, Garrison Jr High, & high school together until he left for Penn. Alan had a special attitude about him that was recognizable humorous, confident, and friendly. Although he not necessarily known for his athleticism, he once brought out strange objects that none of us had seen in our neighborhood before thereby introduced us to lacrosse with his new stick and ball.
We met Jacqueline once at the beach at Sea Colony. Joan & I want to express our deep sympathy but retain our fond memories of AJL.

TO DAD
What do you say, ‘bout a man when he's gone
To find the true saying, its hard, some part wrong
To miss so much moment, to forget little things
Not to feel his love present, when only sad rings
But I'll try anyway, to express from my view
The life of our man, the one we all knew
Father and husband, uncle brother and friend
With so little time now, these words love to send
He was loud he was soft, and often a lover
His feelings all out there, not under cover
He filled up a room, with talking and fun
But when he thought fools, they'd better off run
He fixed and he fiddled, assembled, adjusted
And ne'er afore long a thing fixed, if it busted
He toiled over spaces so we'd feel warm and cozy
T'was a game, was a joy, to surround us in rosy
Now the world is much nicer for spaces he drew
And in Washington special, there's more than a few.
All brick and clean beauty, so carefully crafted
And to think that by hand all, the plans had been drafted
For all the so many, he touched in this town
Which for so many years, he made his home ground
All as one on this day, we are feeling his missing
For hear now our words, once more his cheek kissing
And to me oh so gracious, to be treated like brother
So generous and kind and wise like no other
He welcomed me in to be family and friend
Hence I morn him so deeply now here at the end.
So long my dear friend, grand father and brother
Dad husband and cousin, and uncle and other
You leave a great hole, for the rest of us here
It's right in our hearts, where we hold you so dear.

Dear Friends,
We will all remember Alan as a colleague, friend, pal, mentor, architect and most of all just one heck of a great guy that will be missed dearly by each of us.
His legacy lives on through not only all the buildings he designed that line Connecticut Avenue and K Street, and the more recent projects that he has done with all of us, but through all the lives he has touched with his spirited humorous laugh, his good nature, his feisty inspired persistence, his knowledge, and his love of work and life; and the wonderful gift of family and friends that shared in his beautiful journey.
Good night Alan,
Peace
Richard

I remember the thrill of working with Alan in the late 70's as a young intern. The office was always busy with interesting projects. Alan entrusted me with more responsibility than I could ever imagine. He was always there to help fix my mistakes; to teach and explain. I don't know how he found the patience! He never lost his love for architecture. I have many fond memories of Alan during those wonderful years. Jackie, my prayers are for you in this difficult time.

We miss Alan! I remember him as a generous colleague and great mentor to our junior staff. I remember when he said to a young knucklehead, "hey, there's supposed to be someone sitting in that chair!" well guess what, that fellow is now a competent architect. Alan, so many have benefited from working with you,

I have only known Alan for a few years since I moved to DC but as we worked together and talked I got to know him a little. He was a warm, decent man, concerned with the development of younger architects. He was a strong force for those around him. He was friendly to me and I respected him greatly. He will be missed. My thoughts are with the Lockman family.
