I am so very sorry to learn of Dr. Retik passing. I was a long time patient of his at Boston Children's. I was under his care from the age of 1 to about 25 years of age. I had countless surgeries by him. I would not be living the happy life I have if it weren't for him. My heart goes out to the family.

I am sorry to learn of Dr Retik´s passing. In the 1980´s, our son, was referred to Dr Retik at Childrens. He diagnosed and performed a delicate surgery to remove an obstruction that saved one of my son´s kidneys. This was transformative in the life of my son, now almost 50, and of our whole family! We can never forget the skill and acumen of Dr Retik. His life and his memory is a blessing! Thank you, Dr Retik.

My sympathies to the entire Retik family. Alan Was an incredible "tour de force" in our specialty, admired and respected worldwide. He and I go back to 1967 when he was an observer fellow at Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London with Sir David Innes Williams. D. I. Williams was is generally accepted as the father of modern Pediatric Urology and I was fortunate to to be the Senior Surgical House Officer at the time. Alan encouraged me to apply for a Urology Residency in the US because Residencies in the US were organized and could be completed in 3 -m 4 years, unlike UK where training could take 10 years or more without guarantee of an Attending position after all that time. However, I took Alan's advice and completed a Residency at McGill and returned to the UK & Mr Williams for my Pediatric Fellowship. Then in initiated a Pediatric Urology Division at University of Connecticut and was proud to have Alan as visiting professor on number of occasions. I was recruited to then Tufts Floating Hospital for Children when Alan transferred to the then Children's Hospital Medical Center, then "Children's Hospital", Boston. Alan, of course had a fantastic career building a department, essentially from scratch following a single pediatric urologist into one of the worlds most respected departments Pediatric Urology Departments. Often, when i was introduced to others, by Alan, I was able to chip in and say " Yes, Alan learned his Pediatric Urology, in London, looking over my shoulder" as I was scrubbed with Mr. Williams in the Operating Room. Thank you for helping to elevate our sub-specialty To a level of universal respect. Rest in peace.

A mentor and role model for many young children's surgeons who fostered both discovery and the care of children with great enthusiasm and kindness. I will miss him, his presence and his friendship.

Dr. Retik performed the same surgery on 3 different family members over the course of 50 years. We want to send our thoughts to his family and let them know how much of a positive impacted he has had on countless families. Thank you for everything Dr. Retik, may you rest peacefully.
