Life's Small Pleasures

Alan Richman was never much of a social animal. Mr. Richman, 44, a vice president for employee benefits at Marsh & McLennan, liked to go to the opera and the theater on occasion, said his sister Jane Gewant. But for the last two years, his life outside work had revolved around his parents, who lived near him in Riverdale in the Bronx.

Mr. Richman was by his father's side for two years, helping him battle cancer. After his father died in April, he moved in with his mother. "He just said, `I think Mommy needs me and I think I'll help her,' " Ms. Gewant said. Mother and son had five months of quality time, going to the botanic gardens at nearby Wave Hill or simply relaxing together, before the widow Ruth Richman lost her son, too.

"Alan lived a quiet life," Ms. Gewant said. "He wasn't a risk taker. He didn't ski. He lived a very simple life. For him, going to Wave Hill and reading the newspaper was wonderful. He was very content in his own world, in Riverdale, and in family. And so to me it's unbelievable that his death would be so violent."

Not sure what to say?

I still remember. May he continue to rest in peace.

He was one of my best friends in high school & he told bullies to stop bothering me-& they did. He was such a good guy, who never hurt anyone. I remembered many great timesstudying & laughing with him.

I know it's been a long time and I never put a note on this page before but it is 16 years later and I still remember. Frequently, Alan and I would ride the same early "Express Bus" downtown from Riverdale in the morning and we would always nod good morning to each other. His picture is displayed at the 9/11 Tribute Museum where I volunteer and I remember him every time I'm there. I didn't know him really but I knew he was just like so many who just went to work that day but,...

Saw your sons name and read about him. A simple man with a great heart. So sorry for your loss.

Remembering you always.

Alan will always be forever in my heart.

My Dear Alan, may you rest in peace always. Love, Pat
