Not sure what to say?

Dear Winnie, Children and Arends family, Liesbeth and I send you our sincere condolences. I have fine memories of Bert, as a child, later through the numerous letters and photos and last years by facebook. RIP my dear cousin.

I love your family so much. I am so sorry for this great loss. I am so great full for the time we had together. When Mike was dying Bert told him whether Mike lived or died he would be all right. I know Bert is all right now in the loving arms of his Heavenly Father. My sympathies to the entire Arends family

That is a very fitting tribute. Bert was a TREMENDOUS example of positive acceptance of people and circumstance. He had such a presence, both physical and emotional. Everyone felt welcome around him. As my brother he was a blessing to me in many ways and will remain a positive influence in my life. He was a kind, caring person whose heart was large enough to welcome everyone.

Sending my love and condolences to you, Winnie, and to Mike, T.J. and Matthew. Elizabeth is representing us all, as I am staying in El Paso with the children. I have good memories of when we used to visit you and Bert in Kalamazoo, when Mike was very young, and before that in many family gatherings. God's comfort, grace, and peace surround you all. Love, Diana

TJ just want to say I am sorry for the loss of such a good man. He served his country with great honor. We should all take a page out of his chapter make time for the ones you love and be kind to all. I have somethings in common I to love golf but it may not be my game and I am a salesman as well. I would have love to have a conversation with him. Prayers for you and your family my friend.

I remember Bert as a caring cousin, always interested in how you were doing, what you were doing and urging me to come visit Winnie and him in Florida. I'm so glad I got to see him at his 70th birthday party where his love for his grandchildren was wonderful to watch, and reciprocated! I'll miss his booming voice and personality. Rest in peace dear Bert, Ineke

It would be difficult to find a more positive and generous person, and it was all genuine. One thing most people don't know is that Bert was also a teriffic singer. Us brothers would gather around the organ with my mother, and we would sing hymns, so beautiful that bystanders would stop in front of our home to listen. Bert had such a beautiful voice that he entered numerous contests and mostly won first place in the singing competition. These accomplishments were awarded with "silver"...

Bert was the best and I have many stories. My favorite was his son TJ and myself. On a par 4 dog left Bert decided to cut the corner of the hole (over water). He gave it a mighty swing and proceeded to fall flat on his face on the tee. TJ and I were barely missed by Bert falling as we were doubled over laughing. Bert got up and brushed himself off taking it all in stride. We then looked for his ball....it was on the green!!!

A big man with a big heart. His obituary is accurate and well written. Albert and I communicated regularly via email these last several years. I, as many of you, miss him dearly. He was a great cousin. Bert Messelink, State College, PA
