Not sure what to say?

Bert Fields was my mentor, colleague, and friend. I will miss his wisdom and his wit. With his passing we have all lost a great model of what it means to be a teacher, scholar, and, yes, a friend.

Dear Chris, Sara Beth, and Anthony,
You had very specual parents. I know that you will cherish the memories of happy family times. Although I was a colleague from the History Department, some of our best shared times together were walking with Mary Dichmann at Toledo Bend in search of wild flowers. The peaceful setting seems appropriate. May your present sorrow soon be pushed to the background by memories of joyous moments and events together,

Dr. Fields was a great inspiration for me. I left U(S)L in 1983; to this day I continue to work and publish on Milton, and I owe him a great deal of gratitude for instilling in me a great love for Milton.

Dear Chris, Sara Beth, and Anthony,
I offer you my prayers and condolences at the death of your father, and my sorrow at your mother's illness.
I have such wonderful memories of both of them. In fact, your dad was responsible for getting Jim and me to USL in 1985. And I remember riding to LSU with your mom, when she was taking courses toward her degree.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Chris, Sarah Beth and Anthony,
Karen and I are so sorry to hear of your father's death and of your mother's illness. We consider both of them our dear friends who impacted and influenced our lives in many wonderful ways. We loved being in their home on many occasions and their fellowship is something we miss. You are all in our prayers and thoughts.

Bert touched many lives in his personal and professional life. I recall him as a model when I was a beginning college teacher. He and Joan have also been exceptional colleagues and friends in the years that followed.

Bert's love of literature and zest for learning touched the hearts of many students. I am one. I feel like we all have lost a beloved family member. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Chris, Sarah Beth, and Anthony,
I was very sorry to hear about the loss of your father and your mother's illness. You are in the thoughts and prayers of many in Lafayette. With my sincere sympathy.
