Tribute by Jim Beaupre
July 26, 2008
Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Huntsville, Alabama

For those of you who do not know me, I am Jim Beaupre. I am honored to be here today to share some thoughts about Al Froelich-- my dear friend who was also a loving husband, devoted father, good neighbor and colleague, and excellent physicist.
Almost 50 years ago, in September of 1958, outside of Jaeger hall at St. Procopius...

I was a college classmate of Al’s at St. Procopius College in Lisle, Illinois. We met in our freshman year, fifty years ago, September 1958, and I remember him as clearly as if we met yesterday – he made that much of an impression on me. From the outset, he was a person who stood out – his quick wit, enthusiasm for fun and mischief (usually egging on those of us who would get caught and penalized while he managed to skirt “trouble”), his diligent study habits and ensuing honor roll status,...

Memories of Al

Al went to Illinois Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois, where I met him in freshman year when we were in the same dorm (the only dorm at that time) and on the same floor. During his time in college he carried the nickname “Fro” which stuck with him off and on throughout his life.

I will always remember Al as an energetic enthusiastic person. He had a zest for life and was one of the smartest persons I’ve ever known. He had a great intellect. Al was also a...

Friends and Family of Al,

I was Al's classmate at Immaculate Conception HS, his roommate at St. Procopius College, and a coworker in nuclear polarization studies when he was in grad school at Notre Dame and I was working in the same field at Duke. He honored me by selecting me to be his best man for his wedding to Gail.

There are many memories of him as a precise and hardworking physicist, and as an enthusiastic friend. One immediate image that comes to my mind is his...

At a Canasta game in Huntsville 2002

We had the privilege to know and appreciate Al because he and Gail welcomed our son Arne wholeheartedly into their family when he fell in love with their daughter Gisela.

Al was a dedicated physicist. He always tried to involve me in discussions of physical problems. Although a physicist myself by education, my professional path with IBM had taken a different direction. I must therefore have been a disappointing sparring partner for Al.

Al applied the same dedication to...

There was never any doubt about who was the boss!
