Houghton-White Pine Albert T. (Bud) Hainault, 89, of White Pine, and for the past year and a half the Bluffs Senior Community in Houghton, passed away March 5, 2005. One of fourteen children, he was born April 8, 1915 in Hubbell, Michigan to Albert J. and Delia (Chandonais) Hainault. He attended St. Cecelia Catholic School through the eighth grade and graduated from Lake Linden High School in 1933. Upon graduation, he left home seeking adventure and to help support his family. He worked on several WPA projects in the Lake Linden area, sailed one summer on the vessel Tashmoo, attended Camp Kaye Forestry School for a year, worked as lead surveyor for re-monumenting Houghton County and explored the country hopping trains and hitch-hiking. He began a long career in the copper industry starting with Calumet and Hecla in 1937. In October 1938 he married Alberta Brunette of Hurontown and settled in Hubbell. He was hired by White Pine Copper Company in 1954 as chief chemist. He later advanced to casting foreman in the smelter and finally quality control supervisor. Alberta died in September 1972 after a long battle with cancer. In July 1974, he married Rose Salonen of Silver City. He retired from White Pine Copper Company in 1978. He was widowed again when Rose passed away in 1993. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church in White Pine, the White Pine Lions Club, and the Monsignor Rezek Assembly of Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the White Pine Fire Department for many years serving as chief for nineteen years. He was also elected as treasurer of Carp Lake Township for 20 years and enjoyed several years with Toastmasters International. He enjoyed carpentry, reading history, and gardening and was well known for his gift for telling entertaining stories. Bud is survived by two sons, Gene (Pam) Hainault of Kenosha, WI, and Jim (Kathy) Hainault of Hancock; two daughters, Gail (Godfrey) Holmstrom of Issaquah, WA, and Mary Claire (Bill) Lahti of White Pine, MI; two stepsons, Sherman (Dorothy) Salonen of Capistrano Beach, CA, and Knox (Doris) Salonen of Lake Gogebic, MI; four brothers, Paul (Alice) Hainault of Houghton, Ted (Lil) Hainault of Hancock, Joe (Carol) Hainault of Escanaba, and Harry (Gretchen) Hainault of Hubbell; three sisters, Sister Nivard Hainault of Menominee Falls, WI, Pat (Bob) Lynch of Detroit, and Joan (Larry) Poissant of Ishpeming; 9 grand children, 5 great-grand children, 6 step-grand children, 12 step-great grand children; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Bud was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Alberta, his second wife Rose, six sisters, Claire, Dorothy and Alice Hainault, Henrietta Blakeman, Betty Dupuis Loraine Schnotola and 1 Step Daughter Shirley Salonen. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, March 9, at 11:00 AM, at St. Cecilia Church in Hubbell, Father Francis G. Dobrzenski presiding. Spring internment will be at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton. Visitation will be at Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock on Tuesday, March 8 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. where a prayer service will be held at 7:45 P.M.
