Albert "Al" Piatt

After a year long battle with cancer, Albert "Al" Piatt went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 13, 2011. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Al was born in Jermyn, Pennsylvania, on December 18, 1934. Al hunted and fished Nelson County for 30+ years and retired here 14 years ago after a career as a machinist. Al knew no strangers and was a wonderful and loving family man. He was known by all in the Afton area as the "go to guy" for projects or a helping hand. He always had a joke or a recipe to share. He will be missed by all who knew him and will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Anna and Cyrus Piatt; his brothers, William and John; and sisters, Laura Rotell and Margaret Snedeker. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marjorie; five daughters, Antoinette Piatt, Sally Walnetski and her husband, Kenneth, Barbara Clark and her husband, Steve, Mary Long and her husband, Greg, Patricia Manchester and her husband, Steve; 12 grandchildren, Katie, Amy, Andy, Kenny, Heather, Rachael, Cameron, Nicholas, Sydney, Alex, Chase and Allyson; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Bentley. He is also survived by his three brothers, Fred, Robert and his wife, Susan, and Earl and his wife, Frances; two sisters, Eleanor Durst and Mary Casey and her husband, Kenneth; and a sister-in-law, Ceil Washburn and her husband, Randy; along with many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of his Life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, December 18, 2011, at the Church of the Blue Ridge, 9357 Critzer Shop Road, Afton, VA 22920.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911; 540-456-8653.
