Albert J. Pond, age 79, a lifelong resident of Munising, died Friday, June 10, 2005 at Marquette General Hospital. Albert was born was born on May 20, 1926 in Munising to the late David F. and Pearl E. Cooper Pond. He was a 1944 graduate of Munising's Mather High School. On July 12, 1948 he married Patricia R. Parker at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Munising. Albert proudly served his country with the United States Army during World War II where he obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant, fought in the Battle of The Bulge and was with the 6th Calvary Mechanized Group. Following the war he worked with the Kimberly Clark Corporation as a machine operator for many years until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Pond was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Munising American Legion Post 131, the Chaplin with Post 131, Loyal Order of Moose and a dear member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Munising. Albert was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and picking berries. In his free time, he enjoyed doing woodcarving for his friends. He also loved to play his harmonica and was a clown in the Fourth of July parade in Munising for 40 years. Albert is survived by two sons, George David Kathleen Pond of Iron Mountain and Bryan D. Joy Pond of Plainwell; a daughter, Susan D. Mark Welke of Marquette; six grandchildren, George Breanna Pond Jr. of Ann Arbor, Steven Clara Pond of Goodyear, AZ, Brett Jamie Stevenson of Coleman, Joshua Kristy Burt of Woodbridge, VA, Daniel Stevenson of Marquette, and Heather Pond of Plainwell; three great grandchildren, Hailey, Parker and Garrett. Preceding him in death besides his parents was his wife Patricia and a brother, Francis N. Pond. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Munising with Rev. Chris Gardiner officiating. Inurnment will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by Munising American Legion Post 131.
