DOVER- Albert Joseph Placid Rheaume,81, of 8A Horne St. and formerly 15 Horne St. died peacefully Saturday, July 26, 2003 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, surrounded by his family after a two year courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Somersworth February 24, 1922, he was the son of Alphonse J. and Josephine M. (Caron) Rheaume.
He spent his youth in Somersworth and moved to Dover over 50 years ago.
Al proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor and later served in the Fiji Islands during WW II. On December 7, 2001 he was honored by the city of Dover for his involvement at Pearl Harbor and was awarded a key to the city at that time.
Al was employed at Diamond National for several years after which he worked at Star Lumber for over 21 years. For the past 16 years until presently, he was a parking enforcement officer with the Dover Police Department. It remained his goal to return to his favorite job in September, that of crossing guard at Woodman Park School, until the time of his death. His years of employment with the Dover Police Department were happy years and he was honored as employee of the quarter in July 1996.
He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, greatgrandfather, Al volunteered at Dover Soup Kitchen and was a Bingo volunteer for Great Bay Services. In earlier years he was committee chairman for the Cub Scouts Pack 170 and enjoyed his involvement in the Boy Scouts Pack 179 of Dover also. He was a former member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Rheaume was an avid reader of Civil War history. He enjoyed the outdoors and traveling and was a very dedicated follower of his children’s and grandchildren’s sports activities. He enjoyed watching baseball, football, and auto racing and kite flying.
Family members include his wife of 57 years, Rhenda M. (Porelle) Rheaume whom he married September 30, 1946 at Fort Dix, NJ; two sons, Glen D. Rheaume and his wife Claire of Somersworth and Robert A. Rheaume and his wife Claire of Rochester; three daughters, Donna L. Tetreault and her husband Thomas of Somersworth, Sharon A. Morse and her husband Asa Morse III of Somersworth and Tammy M. McGlone and her husband Robert of Dover; 15 grandchildren, Timothy Kenyon of Reno, NV, Jonathan Kenyon of Barrington, Thomas Tetreault of NC, Nickey Esch of Westland, MI, Jennifer Tetreault of Newington, Julie Stephens of Gonic, Asa Morse IV of Dover, Benjamin Morse of Barrington, Kristen Rheaume of Somersworth, Crystal McGlone of Lebanon, ME, Shelley McGlone , Michael McGlone, and Matthew McGlone, all of Dover, Jacob Rheaume and Emilee Rheaume both of Rochester; ten great grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Cameron Couch, Molly and Bradley Stephens, Ronald and Joshua Esch, Liam and Riley Kenyon, Estlin Kenyon and Sarah Ann Morse, cousins,sisters-in-law, brothers -in-law, several nieces and nephews and a very special friend, Sid Gerstenblatt of York, ME. .
He was predeceased by four brothers, George, Adelard, Richard, and Alphonse Rheaume and two sisters, Annabelle and Theresa Rheaume.
Relatives and friends may call Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM PM at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. Dover. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 AM at St. Joseph Church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth.
