Al Rossi was a terrific guy with a heart of gold and damned good editing skills. We worked together on the Living/Arts copy desk for many years. He was versatile and hardworking. He was also witty and funny, sometimes unintentionally. You wouldn't want to get into a back-and-forth with him because you would lose. I remember one morning I called his house to see what time he was coming in. When he got to work, I said, "Who was that woman who answered the phone?" Another editor cracked, "That...

Hilarious, smart, nice, patriotic. Doesn't get any better than that. His friends loved the annual cookout/swim at the Bourne condo where he and I walked the canal a hundred times. He drove like a bat out of hell, he laughed like a crazy man, and he had more stories than a mile-high skyscraper. Sail on forever old friend.

So sorry. Als humor and cheer at the Boston Globe brightened the day, every day.
