I knew him as a teacher at Hofstra in the 1970's-he was a kind and luminous man - he gave me sagacious advice I never forgot.
He will remain in the minds & hearts of many always.

Sad news! A wonderful personality, fabulous teacher, and a brilliant composer. I remember many of the Shakespeare scores he wrote with special pleasure, and hearing from him was always a treat. He will be missed, and remembered, always warmly.

Al was a special man. For me, his greatest gift was that he was always himself. He was a wonderful composer, musician, teacher, and friend. I know that I'm not alone in saying I'll miss him.
