Alex was immediately friendly on making your acquaintance and very generous with his time, especially with up-to-date information about soccer. We can understand why Joan adored him and she was a very good judge of character, not easily persuaded by appearance.

As a friend of Joan Weber at Duke I heard of Alex long before I met him, and he more than lived up to his reputation as a kind, generous, intelligent person as my husband and I got to know him better. We have lost a good friend; the world, a great American.

This is Diana Karas. Former neighbor and friend of Alex, Joan and John. While I have met Zhang - she may not remember me I will always remember the quirky little red house they had in Tappan . My fondest memory is being introduced to soccer at an early age by Alex and him taking us on field trips to the stadium to watch the cosmos play. My deepest condolences to the family of Alex. I knew him during the 1970's when we covered together the New York Cosmos soccer team for our respective newspapers (he for the New York Times and me for The Home News and The News Tribune). He was a great writer and a great friend. He was born in Greece and made the U.S. his home. And I was born in the U.S. and made Greece my home, and thus from 1978 and onwards we went our separate ways. He continued his career at the Times and I worked for...
