GOMEZ, Alexander J. "Alec" - Of Fenton, age 18, died Monday, September 13, 2010 at his residence. Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at St. John Catholic Church, 600 North Adelaide, Fenton, with Father David Harvey officiating. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 1-3 and 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. Alec was born in Flint on July 30, 1992 to Ed and Brenda (Wehrli). He attended St. John School in Fenton and graduated from Powers Catholic High School. He had been admitted to the University of Michigan and awarded the Michigan Tradition Scholarship. Alec loved the sciences and the arts, especially acrylic painting and glasswork. He enjoyed hanging out with his friends, lake and ocean activities and playing soccer. Alec was a kind, loving, caring, spiritual person who will be missed greatly by his family and friends. Surviving are brother Spencer, grandparents Aurelia Gomez, Robert and Betty Wehrli, aunts and uncles, Maria Gomez of Albuquerque, NM, Robert (Alicia) of San Antonio, TX, Rose Fish (Curt) of Ann Arbor, Brant Wehrli (Cindy) of Meridian, ID and cousins Evan, Olivia and Paolina Gomez and Joshua Wehrli. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made to Powers Catholic High School for the Alec Gomez Memorial Fund or to Hurley Medical Center Child Life Services. Although I did not know Alec, my daughter Meredith, was one of Alec's nurses at Hurley. I just got done watching the tribute that his friends had put together and Meri had posted it on her FB page, as well as reading about Alec's life and his dream of the coral reefs. That dream will live on in his memory and apparently our dear Lord and Savior had something much more special for Alec.
