Alexander Jacobowitz Obituary

Alexander Moss Jacobowitz, age 24, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2016. He had an unexpected massive heart attack and seizure several days earlier. Alex was the beloved and only child of Roberta Moss and her late husband, Roy Jacobowitz. Born July 28, 1991, in Salem MA. Alex has been a resident of Marblehead since age five. Alex was a graduate of the Marblehead School System passing through the Gerry, Coffin, and Village Street schools before graduating from the High School in 2010. He was attending Salem State University and was a senior in the Art and Design Department, concentrating in Art History. Alex was a remarkable young man who lived life with his whole heart. He was a creative, intelligent thinker. He had deep empathy for others. He was generous and adventurous in spirit. He was authentically curious and eager to learn. The threads that tied history to people and art were especially fascinating for him. Alex drew people into conversations, gestured vigorously to emphasize points, and asked lots of questions. He was passionate about art, art history and, was indefatigable in museums. He was a good artist and enjoyed working in various mediums. He was thrilled to be accepted to participate in an art study program in Italy this July. Alex was a person of faith across many boundaries. He was an active participant in several religious groups including St. Stephens in Lynn Young Adult Group and Salem States Hillel. He spent many of his early years at the JCC in Marblehead and Young Judaeas youth camps in the United States and Israel. He traveled to Biloxi with an Episcopal youth coalition to help rebuild after Hurricane Katina. Recently, he went on a Birthright Trip to Israel, and he became a Bar Mitzvah. He saw beyond barriers and through social norms that obscure racism, elitism, and all of the other lenses we use to navigate our way. Alex loved to swim and snorkel. He was a member of the North Shore Swim Club throughout high school. At University, he happily participated in the Sci-Fi and Philosophy Clubs. Alex loved travel, rituals, and traditions: Christmas holidays in Mexico, summers on Leadbetter Island in Maine, visiting with his Grandparents in Florida, and Thanksgivings in DC. Travels in Europe with his parents were about exploring, roaming museums and learning that the world is indeed a small place. Alex will be deeply missed by us all. Services for Alexander Moss Jacobowitz will be held on March 26, 2016, at 10:30 am at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 135 Lafayette Street, Marblehead, MA 01945. In keeping with Alexs commitment to making the largest impact possible, his last act of generosity was to be an organ donor. In honoring Alexs passion for art and community among his peers, contributions in his name may be made to Raw Arts, 37 Central Square #2, Lynn, MA 01901. I was so fortunate to have Alex as a high school student. He engaged me and everyone around him to think deeply about what truly matters. My heart goes out to his mother, who has so suddenly lost a remarkable son. May we all live with as much passion, curiosity and concern as Alex.

While Alex was only 24, he made an incredible impact on many people's lives. I will never forget his quick laugh and easy going nature; his love of learning, passion for history and sense of justice. I will hold our endless talks in my heart. He has touched so many lives and I know that mine is better for having known him. He will be missed.

My deepest and sincere sympathy goes out to you at this sad time. It was heartwarming to read that the inquisitive and engaging little boy that I knew from the Gerry School, grew to have a life rich in interests and experiences. The way in which he lived his life should be an inspiration to us all.

May the God of comfort bring the family peace in their time of grief.

Alex leaving us is beyond untimely. There was so much more inside him just waiting to burst out into the world to surprise us all. Never have we known a kinder, sweeter, more genuinely concerned person who truly had love for all, and showed it happily. What incredible lessons he has taught us, and we are better having known him. No one could make us laugh like Alex. He showed us how to love the life we were given. Thank you, Alex. Love, Dawn and Bill Ressler

Alex was one of the most gentle souls that I have ever known. His sudden loss is devastating. He had the ability to be so completely in the moment. The world Alex shared was never gloomy or mundane. He brought life and enthusiasm with him. He noticed and celebrated the smallest things. He took frustration in stride, and never gave up hope or optimism.
My heart goes out to Roberta.

I didn't know Alex very well but I sometimes saw him at the Sci-fi Fantasy Club and played some board games with him and fellow members. I also saw him a couple of times at Hillel and he was passionate about Judaism and always offered to expand knowledge of Judaism to fellow non-Jewish students such as myself. It's shocking that he has passed so suddenly. May he rest in peace and be in a better place now. He will be missed.

What an amazing full life lived in such a short amount of time, and despite challenges. I only had the pleasure of meeting Alex a few times during the founding of the SSU Hillel, but I was hugely moved by how passionate he was about the group and how driven he was to help others. Even just reading his daily facebook posts about art and religion reminded me of the importance of staying positive, staying curious, and being unique. What inspiring things he would have gone on to do.

I met Alex and his mother over a year ago, he was switching res halls and there had been a communication mix up, a super frustrating experience and they were both so kind and polite I always made a point to say hi to him after. Hopefully Alex's legacy of kindness will be carried on by the many lives I am sure he touched.

I sat next to Alex in one of my classes last semester and he was always so nice and every morning asked how I was. In today's college world it is rare to find someone that will talk before classes begin, so it was nice to sit next to someone who actually wanted to talk. He was always so excited to learn even in a geology course that was outside of his major. This news breaks my heart, but I'm honored I got to know such a lovely young man!

Dear Roberta, We met just once in the parking lot of St. Stephen's where I manage the office. I had the pleasure of knowing Alex and experiencing his beautiful spirit. He was always so sweet and polite, a splendid soul. I share your heavy heart and want you to know it has been a blessing that your son was in my life. Cherish the memories, you are clearly a wonderful Mom and Alex was blessed.

He was kind and giving to everyone he met. I loved having Alex in my classes at SSU - he was a wonderful person. My heart goes out to his wonderful mother.

Ah Alex, always a smile, always willing to try something out, persistent and loving. I had the pleasure of being one of three clergy that participated in a three-church youth program that Alex was part of when I was the priest at Saint Peter's - San Pedro in Salem, In that time we got to know one another pretty well and today I am blessed for the light of his soul, a light that still shines in those of us who were on the journey together in this kingdom. Dear Roberta,

I think we only met once--at Roseann's wedding. But over the years Roseann has kept me up to date on you and your family. I feel such sorry for what happened to Alex and for you in your loss(es)--husband and father in the past several years before Alex. I hope you can find refuge in your sister and the Marblehead community--esp the Episcopal church you and Roseann grew up in and which Roseann talks fondly of. I pray that you will find peace somewhere in the future.
