Alexander Francis Moore was born on October 7, 1938 to the union of Erwin and Eula Moore. Preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Erwin Moore Jr, Vernon Moore, and John Wesley Moore; and his sisters, Clarietta Norris, Mary Mitchum, and Gertrude Moore.

Deacon Alex was baptized at Saint Peter Claver Parish in Mobile and remained there as a member until he transferred to Saint Francis Xavier Parish in Mobile.

After attending Saint Peter Claver School, Deacon Alex entered the Josephite Seminary. After profession as a brother for Saint Joseph’s Society of the Sacred Heart, he later attended Xavier University of Louisiana to pursue additional studies in the arts. He served at the Josephite Pastoral Center as an illustrator for calendars and Christmas cards. Paintings, portraits, sketches, and sculptures of Deacon Alex are in parishes and Catholics institutions around the world.

After leaving the Josephite Fathers and Brothers, and returning to Mobile, he entered the diaconate formation program in the Diocese of Mobile. On April 21, 1979, through the imposition of hands, Deacon Alex was ordained to the sacred order of the diaconate by Bishop John L. May from the initial class of permanent deacons for the Diocese of Mobile. He served with distinction at Saint Francis Xavier Parish, Most Pure Heart of Mary Parish and School, and Our Mother of Mercy Parish (Plateau).

Most of his adult life was engaged in the development of youth. In addition to serving as residence hall director (dorm master) at Saint Joseph Industrial School in Clayton, Delaware, he served as a house parent at Saint Mary’s Home, and worked at Mobile Head Start, and USA Head Start Training Center.

Deacon Alex is survived by one son, Steven Alexander Moore; a foster son, Chris Moffatt; a loving and devoted sister, Cassie B. Moore; and eight nieces, four nephews, a host of grandchildren, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
