Alexander Andrew Szabo Jr. passed away on September 26, 2014. He was 84. Alex deeply missed his wife, Louise, after she passed away in 2009. In his later years, Alex enjoyed being with his sons, their wives and 4 grandchildren at numerous family gatherings.
In 1948 at the age of 18 Alex enlisted in the United States Marine Corps for the opportunity to see the world. He fought and was wounded in the Korean War. On one Mediterranean cruise with the Marines in 1953 he met Louise at a USO event in Nice, France. Alex and Louise came to the United States and were married in 1955. After 13 years in the Marines, with stints as a drill instructor in Camp Lejeune and as a surveyor, Alex embarked on a career at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as a cartographer. Alex retired from NOAA in 1985. Alex and Louise traveled extensively and especially enjoyed trips to islands in the Caribbean. They enjoyed their years at Leisure World in Silver Spring and will finally rest side-by-side at Norbeck Memorial Park in Olney. The family wishes to express their thanks to Suburban Hospital and Casey House for their loving care of Alex in his last days. A final memorial service and burial is planned for Thanksgiving 2014.
