I first met Al Baker at am AGA reception for Tufts in the late 70s. We bonded when I came back to Chicago as we were both disciples of Marshall Kaplan. When I joined the University of Chicago staff in the 80´s, our friendship became closer My wife and I were always delighted to get Dot´s Christmas Cards and would occasionally go out to dinner with them. On December 23, 1996 Dr Alfred Baker saved the life of William "Bill" Lynch , a noted international diplomat. Bill was a senior member of famous Nixon-Kissinger team which opened US -China relations. He contracted a virus in China. He was so ill that other doctors were afraid to operate on him. Dr Baker persuaded his friend Dr Jim Williams at Rush to perform a liver and kidney transplant on Bill.
