Alfred Julian Chavez

Al, you will be missed by your Merchant Marine Veterans family. You were truly one of the good guys.

One great adventure that was missing in Al's story was the time he was Boy Scout Troop 232's leader in the early 1960's. He was a fearless and compassionate mentor for many, including me. There were lifelong friendships and connections made during that time and Al was a big part of that.... Later in life I did business with Chevez Lumber and he was the same as always.

Your father/grandfather was truly an amazing man. My father, though he declined from Alzheimer's for the last 30 years of his life (he fought with his last breath) also did a lot and accomplished a lot in the short time he had. He played football, was a long hauler fisherman and raised 5 kids in the process. When I lost him, I found comfort in the scriptures. I wish you the same comfort in your grief.

My grandpa was an amazing man with an amazing life story. His quirks were everything you would want in a grandpa. His joke telling, his proud garage sale findings. He would invite me to last minute lunches with him, stopping by my work to get coffee from me. As a kid, my brother Jake and I would be so excited to see his truck pull up, he would let us pick anything out we wanted from the back of his truck (all garage sale findings), but gold to us at the time.
