KLUGMAN, Alfred Age 94, died on Thursday, April 30 at Pines Edge Nursing Facility at North Hill in Needham. Alfred, the son of Herman and Dora Klugman, was born on June 27, 1920, in Munich, Germany. When he was about 14 his parents recognized that Germany might no longer be safe for a Jewish boy, and sent him to live with his maternal grandmother in Z?rich, Switzerland. In 1939 the whole family emigrated to the United States and settled in Boston. Alfred spent his professional life in health related fields. He started out as a dishwasher at the soda fountain of a pharmacy on Beacon Hill, but soon advanced to other positions in the drugstore. Eventually he graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. Alfred was the first man drafted into US army after Pearl Harbor. He served as a medic in the Philippines. After his discharge he continued in the drugstore world and in 1949 married Trude Griesman, also a refugee from Hitler's Germany. Soon thereafter they bought the Hospital Pharmacy in Cleveland Circle in Brookline. After many years they sold the pharmacy and started First Medical, a successful medical supply business. Alfred and Trude loved to travel and took many trips, all over the world. They had many friends, loved entertaining and parties and endless bridge games. Alfred played poker with special friends one evening a week for decades. In 1999, when Trude developed ALS, they moved from their home in Waban to North Hill Retirement Community in Needham. Trude died there in 2000. Six months after Trude's death, Alfred met Elinor Scholl who led the North Hill bridge game. She brought joy back into his life and Alfred and Elinor had almost 14 wonderful years together at North Hill. Alfred is survived by son Dr. Robert Klugman (Jane) of Northboro, daughter Jean Klugman of Boston, granddaughters Ashley Crohn (Scott) and Allison Gonzalez (Carlos), great grandchildren Addison Crohn and Gabriel Gonzalez, his b'shert, Elinor Scholl, cousins, nieces and nephews and many friends. He was a smart, fun loving, kind and generous man and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the North Hill community.
