Alfred E. Mendel Jr.
83 of Indianapolis passed away July 11, 2025. He was born on October 16, 1941, in Indianapolis, the son of Alfred E. and Maxine Mendel.
Alfred was a retired sheet metal worker with the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #20, and he also was a volunteer fireman for the Wayne Township Fire Department and was a IHSAA football official.
He was a member of the Bridgeport United Methodist Church and the Plainfield Elks Club.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Mendel, children Melissa (Sean Alcola) Hanchar and Alfred S. (Lisa) Mendel, siblings Martha Miller and Phillip (Eriko) Mendel, 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday July 17, 2025, at the Conkle Funeral Home, Speedway Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday July 18th. The burial will follow at Floral Park Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association .

Al was a great firefighter with Wayne Twp serving many years at the Bridgeport Station #7 He also shared his many talents assisting the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association for many years. Al was one of those who would do any thing he could to help where ever he was, and was never lost for words and always quick to say thank you to others. I will miss him so much. We always bickered like crazy when we were young. But became great friends as adults. My husband and I traveled with Al and Patti in RV's a couple years and I have such wonderful memories from those experiences. Al was a good man, a great husband, and a wonderful family man. I feel privileged to have called him my brother.
