Alfred "Fritz" Rod, 79, of Mendota, formerly
of Sublette, died April 22, 2013, in Mendota
Community Hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Merritt
Funeral Home, Mendota, with the Rev. Michael
Slutz officiating. Burial will be
at Restland Cemetery, Mendota.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m.
Friday in the funeral home.
Mr. Rod born June 6, 1933,
in LaMoille to Ross and Verna
(Wendel) Rod.
A graduate of Mendota High
School, he was a salesman for
Schaffer Oil Co. before starting
his own business which was
known as American Specialized
Lubricants. From 1974 through
1990 he was a distributor for
Baldwin Filters. In November 1986 he became a
distributor for Walker Mowers and oversaw 40
dealers while employed by them until retiring in
April 2007.
He was engaged in farming in both the Sublette
and LaMoille areas until 1987.
He is survived by two daughters, Nigal (David)
Oleson of Genoa and Robin (Greg) Casen of
Dixon; three sons, Rodney (Cynthia) Rod of
Arlington, Ross (Carmen) Rod of Marseilles and
David (Tianna) Rod of South Elgin; 13 grandchildren;
six great-grandchildren; and two brothers,
Ralph Rod of Princeton and Donald (Shirley) Rod
of Amboy.
He was preceded in death by one brother, James
and one grandson, Chase.
Memorials may be directed to the Christopher
and Dana Reeve Foundation.

President Lincoln alluded to an old Proverb in his Gettysburg address, which stated that people do not long remember what you say or do, but rather how you made them feel. I can remember a time many years ago on a cold winter's night traveling on a dark and icy road near the farm in Sublette. I rounded a curve and managed to find myself in a ditch and stuck good as good can get.
