Jagers and Sons Funeral Home Obituary

Alice Clapp, passed away August 25, 2024 she was 90 years old.

Alice was born March 21, 1934 in Asheville, North Carolina, to Edmund and Minnie Tyler.  Attended the St.Genevieve‘s School in Asheville before studying piano at Duke, where she received her BA, then continued her studies at Harvard University, for a Masters in Education and then returned to Duke,  receiving an additional  Masters in History.  It was at Duke that she met her future husband, Alfred C Clapp Jr., a fellow grad student.  They married in Asheville NC, August 20th, 1960 and then moved to Scarsdale New York, where Alice took a post teaching music in White Plains, NY.

After moving to Chappaqua, NY, she turned to teaching piano and working with arts nonprofits including NY Poets in the Schools and the Westchester Council for the Arts.  For Alice, music and the arts were always the center of her and her family's life.  Teaching piano, singing in her church choir, summers at Westminster Choir College, sharing concerts with friends and family at The Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall and annual Christmas Parties, where she and choir members would sing the Messiah in its entirety, and nightly sing alongs at the piano, were just some of the ways in which she shared her love for music and community.

When Alice and Al moved to Athens in 2010, Alice quickly became involved with the Choral Union and First Presbyterian Church choir.  She and Al enjoyed telecasts of The Met and jazz nights at Tonys. Alice also loved the outdoors and sports; cross-country skiing, hiking, paddle tennis, fishing and golf with Al and their friends.  More than anything Alice brought people together, through music, and her irrepressible spirit and kindness wherever she lived.

Alice is preceded in death by her husband, Al, her brother Bruce, and her parents, Edward and Minnie.  She is survived by her sons Thomas, wife Jenna and Alfred, wife Lora and grandchildren Hunter, Elisabeth, Adrianna, Bradley and Starr.

A Memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Athens, Ohio on November 9th  at 1pm.  Alice’s ashes will be buried with her husband Al in Montclair, NJ at a later date.
