Alice Webb Kavanagh, 83, of Burnham Ave., died April 10, 2005 at her home in Durham with her family by her side. She was a Durham resident for 39 years.
Born January 2, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan, she was the daughter of Walter M. Webb and Hannah (Haines) Webb.
In 1931 her family returned to the Haines-Wiswall homestead in Newmarket at 212 South Main Street.
She attended Newmarket High School and was a 1939 graduate of Northfield Seminary in Massachusetts. She was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Class of 1943, and later received a Masters in Education from Boston University.
During World War II she joined the Women's Army Corps and was stationed in Bari, Italy with the 15th Air Force from January, 1944 to October, 1945.
She married Bernard M. Kavanagh of Falmouth, Massachusetts in 1955.
She was employed for many years as an educator and taught in schools in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Florida, and Connecticut.
From 1973-1977 she was employed at the Davidson Rubber Company in Dover in their credit union. She retired in 1977.
She was a founding member of the Newmarket Historical Society. She organized Civil War correspondence between her grandfather and grandmother that later was used in academic monographs and staged readings at the Newmarket Heritage Festivals
Mrs. Kavanagh was actively involved with many organizations. She was a past member of the League of Women Voters and the D.A.R. In later years she was active in Silver Squares, Active Retirement Association, and the Seacoast Writers Action Group. She participated in Elderhostel, took painting and sailing lessons, and traveled to Europe, Guatemala, and Mexico. She was active in the Democratic Party.
Mrs. Kavanagh was a member of St. George's Church and was a dedicated volunteer at the Thrift Shop for many years.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Douglas P. Webb of S. Newbury, NH, who died in 2000 and Walter M. Webb Jr., of West Palm Beach, FL, who died in 2004.
She is survived by a son, John M. Kavanagh of Durham; a daughter, Diana Reed and her husband Christopher Reed of Norfolk, Virginia; a granddaughter, Cristina Reed of Norfolk, Virginia; a sister, Louise Webb Tyler of Richmond, VA, several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be 12 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2005, at St. George's Episcopal Church, Durham. Followed by a Funeral Service at 2 p.m. with Rev. Michael Bradley officiating.
Burial with military honors will follow in Newfields Cemetery, Route 108, Newfields.
Flowers are acceptable or should friends desire, memorials may be made either to the Walter M. and Hannah H. Webb Foundation, Capital Advisors, C/O Gus Gerulskis, Point West Place, Suite 101, 111 Spleen Street, Framingham, MA 01701 (with checks payable to National Financial Services), or to the Newmarket Historical Society, P.O.
