Alice Mae Pagter
Feb. 17, 1932 - Dec. 12, 2002
Pagter, Alice Mae, born February 17, 1932, died peacefully in her Albany home of 45 years, as was her wish, under hospice care, December 12, 2002, after a long illness. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Charles Ralph Pagter; son, Daniel Pagter and sister, Anita Tronoff, all of Albany, CA.
A third generation resident of the Berkeley and Albany area. Predeceased by parents, Tyyne (Lauru) Dahl born to the 9th Street Lauru family and Henry Frank Dahl, born in Fort Bragg, but relocated and raised on 9th street as part of the West Berkeley Finnish Colony. An Albany native she completed Cornell School and graduated Albany High in 1950. Graduating first in her class from Armstrong Business College, she worked for a number of local companies including S K S Die Casting, BBB Dept. Store and retired in 1992 after 16 years from the Univ. of California, Office of the President.
She enjoyed camping, fishing, trains, planes and travel, be it the Sierras, a National Park or China. She had a life long interest in gardening among other diverse hobbies. She even practiced Judo for years and helped manager the Albany YMCA Judo Club in the 1970's.
Proud of her family's Finnish heritage, she embodied the proverbial Finnish word 'Sisu' (hardiness) bringing its meaning to those around her, a mixture of courage, perseverance, stamina - with a touch of stubbornness.
She is also survived by her cousins, Janice Moffett and Bernice Fowler of Petaluma, Nadine and Craig Lauru of Placentia and Richmond; nephew, Charles Henry Tronoff; brother and sisters-in-law, Carl Pagter and Ruth Sims.
She was predeceased by aunts and uncles, Ida and Eino (Tiny) Lauru of Evelyn St., Albany and Sigrid and Edwin (Effie) Lauru of Lynn St., El Cerrito and brothers-in-law, Charles Tronoff of Madison St., Albany and Edward Pagter of Santa Clara.
