Dateline Goffsotwn, NH Alice Phelps 68, died June 29, 2011. Born in Loma Linda Ca. she lived in Las Vegas until completing college, she resided in Goffstown for 36 years and retired to Ft. Mohave Az. for 5 years. She graduated from Las Vegas High School where she was a member and served as secretary/treasurer for the marching band and orchestra. Alice graduated from Creighton University with a History/Education major and an English minor. She was a member of Sigma Alpha Sorority, serving as Sorority Mother for new members. She has a Master of Curriculum and Instruction from Notre Dame College of Manchester and received a summer grant to Duke University for history. Mrs. Phelps taught social studies at Hemet Middle school in California from 1964 to 1968. She was an educator in N.H. for 20 years, first at Weare Middle School then Hudson Middle School where she served as Vice Principal for Academics for the last 3 years. She was one of 10 teachers in the U.S. chosen by Gannett Company for an all expense trip to headquarters in Arlington, VA. to discuss the use of U.S.A. Today newspapers in public education classes. For two years she was chosen to develop social studies questions for N.H. assessment tests and was nominated numerous times by Who's Who of American Teachers. Alice was a Sunday School teacher for ten years at the Congregational Church of Goffstown and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. She is survived by her husband of 46 years Norton "Tuffy" Phelps. Two sons Norton Phelps, III of Goffstown and James Phelps of Seattle Wa.. A daughter Kendra Pavlik of Littleton, Ma. Her mother Marjorie Bowman and sister Patricia of Las Vegas, NV. Five grandchildren. Visitation will be held Saturday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at French and Rising Funeral Home 17 South Mast Street Goffstown. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in the name of "Alice Phelps Class of 1964" may be made to the Creighton University Department of Education.
