Alice Mae Shands departed this life on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at Bon Secours Southside Medical Center, Petersburg, Virginia. She was born to the late Emma Walden Shands and Sonnie Shands, Sr. on June 18, 1946.


Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Emma Walden Shands and Sonnie Shands, Sr.; eight brothers, Sonnie Shands, Jr., Roy Manson, Alvin Shands, Curtis Shands, Cecil Shands, Reginald Shands, Leroy Shands, and Willie Shands; four sisters, Celestine Shands, Jeanette Mallory, Vanessa Shands, and Mildred Bryant. 


She leaves to cherish her memories, two devoted sons, Rickey Shands (Takiyah)of Richmond, VA, and James Shands (Lachelle) of Chester, VA; a devoted daughter, Crystal Shands of Hopewell, VA; three sisters, Brenda Carter (Melvin) of Dinwiddie, VA, Francine Tatum (Joseph) of Newport News, VA, and Darlene Shands of Raleigh, NC; two brothers, Tyrone Shands (Sandra) and Harold  Shands of Hopewell, VA;  sisters-in-law, Bertha Manson and Carolyn Shands of Petersburg, VA, and Shirley Shands of Colonial Heights, VA; three grandsons seven granddaughters, four great grandsons and four great granddaughters; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends including a devoted friend, Mrs. Ernestine Shaw and former coworkers, the cafeteria staff at Carter G. Woodson Middle School.


Alice Mae retired from Hopewell City Public Schools due to failing health, after 20 plus years of service at Carter G. Woodson Middle School.


She was the matriarch of the family. Her home was the gathering place for holidays, special occasions, or any time the family wanted to get together. She enjoyed cooking for friends and family who gathered around her kitchen table on the weekends. Everyone could attest to how good a cook she was. She loved music, dancing, game shows, soap operas, and word search puzzles.


Services will be held 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 12, 2023, in the Chapel of J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, VA. The interment to follow at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park.
