Nearly 20 years ago I discovered that Alison & I were cousins (our great-grandfathers were brothers). I was going to be in Chicago for a few days, and we got in touch and planned to meet up. Somehow, that did not happen, and we fell out of contact. I found the old emails recently, and decided to try again. That is how I only today found out about her death. Reading the obituaries underlines what an amazing person she was, and I am all the more sad we never met. I cannot imagine what a hole...

I took Professor Winter's class in 2007 'Science in Victorian Britain' as an undergrad and thought of her and her teaching often on a recent trip to the Natural History Museum in London. She really brought the past, and the passion for scientific discovery to life, and even though I only took one class from her, I will always be grateful and remember her, especially in places of learning.

Allison was a student of mine when she was in the 8th grade at Tappan Junior High School in Ann Arbor. At that early stage she stood out as an exceptionally bright, interested and dedicated young person. I remember how she stayed after school day after day to work on special projects. She was always cheerful and fun to be around.
