Allan Benton was born on June 12, 1947, to Gertrude Arnold and A. Hicks Arnold in Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated from the University of Alabama in 1967 with a degree in Physical Education and Theater Arts. Allan married Philip C. Benton on June 14, 1969. Her early career was with the Y.M.C.A. in Birmingham and in Charleston, N.C. Allan and Phil moved to Scotland upon Phil's completion of his medical internship and joined the U.S. Navy.

While living in Washington, D.C., Allan earned a degree in Interior Design at Mount Vernon College and Phil finished his residency in Orthopedics. Allan and Phil eventually made their home in Pensacola as Phil completed his tour at Naval Air Station Pensacola. Allan continued her career as an interior designer and was a member of ASID, eventually owning her own design firm, and later entering into a successful secondary career in commercial real estate investment.

She continued her interest in the arts and philanthropy, supporting many organizations such as: Pensacola Ballet and Pensacola Opera as both a donor and board member; a member of the Arts Counsel; early supporter of both the Belmont-1947, Art Center and the First City Art Center, and an original organizer of their Annual Pumpkin Patch event.

Allan was also an original member of the Anna Society at Pensacola State College; a sponsor and volunteer for the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival; and an original member of Sunday's Child. She also cared deeply for Alabama Public Radio, Feeding the Gulf Coast, and WUWF 88.1 FM Radio.

After a long and purposeful life, Allan died peacefully and unexpectedly at home on December 4. She leaves behind many beloved friends and her devoted dog George. She will be sorely missed by all she supported in life. Allan was predeceased by her parents, Gertrude and Hicks, as well as her older brother Skip Arnold and her former husband and devoted friend, Dr. Philip C. Benton.

Donations in honor of Allan's life and legacy may be made in her name to the Pensacola Opera at www.PensacolaOpera.com or 850-433-6737.

Not sure what to say?

Cheerful, Funny, Energetic, Effervescent, Enthusiastic, Artistic... these are the words that describe how I'll always remember Allan. We worked together in the mid 80's at Bullock (Caldwell) Tice. She was always smiling, always making someone laugh, always coming up with a fresh, new idea. My favorite Allan story is one she told about being a little girl and swinging her babydoll in full-arm circles as though she was about to pitch a baseball... taller than she realized...she broke the...

Offering my heartfelt condolences to the Benton family. Sorry for your loss. May the peace of God comfort you through this most difficult time.

Ms.Allen It sure was great getting to know you in the short visits we had. I know your Heart was always in the the giving and caring place. Heavens gain. Til we meet again.

Allan at an Aragon party

Allan was a beautiful, creative and fun friend. She was always checking on me - I hope I checked on you as much, Allan.
We would do “art” things together - going to the Van Gogh exhibit, strolling around the GCAF and many gallery visits.
Her sense of joy for life and anything to do with the arts in Pensacola brimmed over into anyone that was with her.
I’ll miss you Allan.
